When it comes to solar, I have seen one thing over and over again. Most of the problems people complain about don’t come from the technology itself, they come from mistakes during installation.

Some of these mistakes are small but costly, others are so big they can completely ruin a system. And many times, the person that suffers is the end user who spent their hard-earned money expecting peace of mind.

Let me share some of the common ones I’ve seen.

The first mistake is wrong sizing. This is the number one killer of solar projects. Someone wants to power TV, fans, fridge, freezer and pumping machine, but they end up with a system that can barely carry bulbs and a fan. It’s either the installer didn’t calculate well or they were trying to cut costs. At the end, the customer feels cheated. The way to avoid this is simple. Always start with the load calculation, I said this in my previous post. Write down the appliances, know their watts, and calculate usage hours. If this step is skipped, the rest will fail.

Another mistake is poor wiring. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen systems burn or underperform simply because of loose connections, undersized cables or mixing up polarity. People don’t realize that solar is sensitive. If your wiring is messy, you’ll lose power, damage components or even risk fire. Just like my Boss always tell our team when I'm starting our new, wiring is not just connection, it’s neatness, correct sizing and safety.

Then there is battery abuse. Many people drain their batteries to zero every day or overload them with appliances that are too heavy. Some even put batteries in hot, unventilated rooms. Before you know it, batteries that should last 5 years die in one year. To avoid this, we always teach our clients how to manage their load and where to position their batteries for longer life.
