6 Facts about the Boeing 787 Dreamliner Electrical Systems

1. The 787 aircraft is designed with 2 primary rechargeable batteries, one is the main battery and the other is the APU battery. The main battery supply power for ground operations and backup power supply.
2. The 787 batteries are made of lithium-ion, with 8 cells each producing 32V/150A direct current. Each battery can weigh up to 28.6kgs.
3. The 787 is built with 6 electrical generators to produce more electricity for the aircraft operations. It has 2 generators on each engine and 2 other generators on the APU.
4. On the ground, the 787 can be started without any ground power unit, the APU battery starts the APU generators, which start the APU to power the engine generators which then start the engines.
5. During flight, the 4 engine generators are the primary sources of electrical power, powering systems such as hydraulics, wing ice protection, flight deck displays, flight controls, in-flight entertainment and more systems.
6. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is capable of flying for 330 minutes on one engine and one generator and land safely.

6 Facts about the Boeing 787 Dreamliner
1. The 787 is the first commercial aircraft to have an airframe majority made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) which have a higher strength-to-weight ratio than conventional aluminum structural materials. Its airframe is primarily composite material in construction.
2. The 787 is the most eco-friendly airliner designed to be 20% more efficient than the Boeing767. The airplane's unparalleled fuel efficiency and range flexibility enables airlines to profitably open new routes as well as optimize fleet and network performance.
3. The size of the windows on a 787 are the largest of any airplane to date measuring 47 by 28 centimeters and the front view of a 787, the wing span measures 60 meters. The length of 787 ranges from 57 meters to 68 meters for 787-10 and the height is a total of 17 meters.
4. The maximum passenger load it can carry, 242 passengers for 787-8, 290 passengers for 787-9 and up to 330 passengers for 787-10.
5. The Dreamliner has a smooth ride technology know as a fly-by-wire control system, it senses turbulences during flight and automatically adjusts the wing control surface for a smoother ride. It has many sensors located all around the aircraft constantly measuring changes in angular velocity and pressure distribution.
6. The cabin is a state of the art, cabin crew members have the ability to customize the lighting in the cabin. It can be simulate to a bright daylight or a calm night sky, even more interesting the plane has no window shades, instead there is a dimming option for passengers.
-An empty 787 weighs approximately to 117,617 kilograms which is equivalent of about 29 elephants!!

3. There are 365 switches, dials and lights in the incredibly confusing flight deck.
