Africa’s renewable energy market is gaining momentum as major solar and battery storage projects expand generation capacity and strengthen energy security across the continent. Egypt is integrating a 600 MWh battery storage system into AMEA Power’s 1,000 MW Benban solar project, which is expected to become Africa’s largest combined solar and storage facility.

South Africa has commissioned a 216 MW solar plant with 500 MWh of battery storage, while NERSA has approved a further 890 MW of solar projects. Zambia is also planning 156 decentralised solar plants, each with a capacity of 2 MW, adding a combined 312 MW to support rural electrification, reduce dependence on drought-affected hydropower and improve grid resilience. These developments reflect the growing role of large-scale solar, distributed generation, storage and international investment in Africa’s energy transition.

Morocco has secured approximately $114 million in financing from the African Development Bank to support the development of Africa’s first integrated electric vehicle battery gigafactory. Located in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra Free Trade Zone, the facility will initially produce 10 GWh of lithium iron phosphate battery capacity each year, with plans to expand to 100 GWh—strengthening regional supply chains, supporting clean-energy manufacturing and positioning Morocco as a major hub for electric mobility in Africa.

Could this project mark the beginning of a new battery manufacturing industry across Africa?

The commissioning of Phase II of the Chisamba Solar Power Plant has added 100 MW of clean energy to Zambia's national grid, bringing the facility's total capacity to 200 MW and making it the country's largest solar power installation. Officially inaugurated by President Hakainde Hichilema, the project marks a significant step in strengthening Zambia's energy security by reducing reliance on hydropower, improving electricity supply for businesses and communities, supporting economic growth, and accelerating the country's transition to a more resilient and sustainable energy future.

Can central Africa’s mining ambitions succeed without reliable power?

Trafigura’s withdrawal from a proposed 2,000 MW Angola–DRC–Zambia transmission project has highlighted the scale of the region’s energy challenge. Zambia’s Copperbelt and the DRC’s Katanga mining region face an estimated power deficit of 1,500–2,000 MW, leaving many copper and cobalt operations dependent on costly diesel generation. While alternative transmission projects remain under development, delays in connecting Angola’s surplus hydropower to these mining centres could continue to constrain production, investment and the global critical-minerals supply chain.

Could Zambia’s new procurement models unlock its next wave of solar investment?

Zambia is emerging as one of Africa’s most attractive renewable energy markets as new procurement models, open-access reforms and growing demand from mining and industry accelerate investment in solar and battery storage.

Measures such as the Carbon Finance Procurement Facility, a competitive renewable energy procurement framework and the ZAMWatt programme are designed to reduce sovereign, credit and single-buyer risks while enabling industrial customers to purchase electricity directly from independent power producers.

Despite ongoing challenges around currency volatility and transmission capacity, Zambia already has 1.15 GW of operational solar and a further 1.64 GW under construction, positioning the country as a potential model for electricity-market reform across Southern Africa.

Could Zambia’s constituency solar programme help close its power deficit?

Zambia has signed contracts with five contractor groups to develop 312MW of solar capacity under the Presidential Constituency Energy Initiative. The programme will install a 2MW solar plant in each of the country’s 156 parliamentary constituencies, with all projects connected directly to the ZESCO grid. Scheduled for completion within 12 months, the initiative is expected to create approximately 15,600 construction jobs, increase national generation capacity and provide local authorities with equity-based revenue for community development.
