Engineering Leadership That Shapes Policy, Reputation, and National Development

The position of Vice President – Policy, Public Relations and National Development (PPRND) within the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) is not merely administrative, it is strategic, influential, and nationally consequential. It represents the face and voice of the institution in shaping policy direction, engaging government, and positioning engineering at the Centre of Zambia’s development agenda.

This office is the critical bridge between the engineering fraternity, policymakers, and industry. It is through this platform that key issues affecting engineers, such as favourable remuneration, professional recognition, and progressive policy reforms are advanced. These aspirations are not achieved through agitation, but through structured dialogue, informed lobbying, and credible engagement with government. Effective engagement at this level demands more than passion. It requires deep understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks, appreciation of public sector protocols, and the corporate maturity to navigate complex institutional environments with professionalism and decorum. It calls for leadership that is strategic, measured, and results-driven.

This is the leadership I bring on board. As Incoming EIZ Vice President – PPRND, my commitment is to elevate the profession through constructive engagement, strengthen the voice of engineers in national discourse, and champion policies that secure the welfare and recognition of every engineer.

This is a call to the engineering fraternity—let us move forward together, with purpose, credibility, and influence

From the Depths of the Mine to the Heights of Leadership: A Journey Forged in Discipline, Excellence, and Purpose

Every great career has a defining foundation. Mine was forged deep within the demanding and disciplined environment of the mining industry, an institution that does not merely employ, but shapes, tests, and ultimately refines leaders. Fresh from the Copperbelt University, I was privileged to be recruited into a highly competitive Management Trainee Programme at Konkola Copper Mines. This was not just an entry point into employment, it was an immersion into a culture of excellence. The programme was deliberately structured to expose young professionals to the full breadth of mining operations. I was systematically attached to multiple departments, gaining hands-on experience in technical operations, planning, procurement, project ex*****on, and administration.

Under the guidance of seasoned professionals and industry experts, I was mentored, trained, and cultured into a results-driven engineer and leader. Early in my career, I was entrusted with responsibilities that went far beyond my years. This was an intentional move by the organisation to build confidence, accountability, and strategic thinking. I had the honour of contributing to the planning, design, procurement, and ex*****on of multi-million-dollar projects, including landmark initiatives such as the KDMP, the 6MTPA Concentrator, the installation and equipping of pipe shafts, ventilation shafts, and the development of mining ramps to enhance underground accessibility. These were not merely projects, they were complex engineering undertakings that demanded precision, coordination, resilience, and unwavering commitment to excellence. The mining environment instilled in me values that have become the cornerstone of my professional life. It taught me the non-negotiable importance of safety consciousness, where every decision carries human consequences. It instilled discipline, ensuring that punctuality, preparedness, and performance are never compromised. It cultivated alertness and responsibility, particularly in leading teams where accountability is collective and outcomes are critical.

These formative years in the mines were transformational. They did not only equip me with technical competence, but more importantly, they built character, resilience, and leadership maturity. Transitioning from the mines into the corporate and public sector, I carried forward these deeply ingrained values. Today, I serve as a C-Suite Executive, a Director in a Public Institution, where I have been entrusted with strategic leadership responsibilities, including appointments to various boards and chairing key governance structures. In every role I undertake, I remain guided by the same principles of excellence, accountability, and service that were instilled in me from the very beginning. The combination of ten years of rigorous experience in the mining industry and over eleven years of leadership in the public sector has uniquely positioned me to lead, transform, and anchor high-level institutions. My journey stands as a testament that true leadership is not accidental, it is cultivated through discipline, exposure, mentorship, and a relentless commitment to growth. To young engineers and professionals: embrace every opportunity to learn, to be challenged, and to grow.

From the depths of the mine to the boardroom table, this journey has been built on purpose, shaped by discipline, and driven by a commitment to excellence.

Engineers Must Champion Corporate Governance

Having just attended the 45th African Corporate Governance Conference held in Cape Town (17–20 March 2026) delivered a clear and compelling message: the future of engineering belongs to professionals who combine technical excellence with strong corporate governance.

With powerful insights from distinguished thought leaders such as Prof. Oliver Saasa, Prof. Mervyn King, State Counsel Mumba Kapumpa, and Prof. Somadoda Fikeni, the conference underscored a critical shift that confirmed engineering is no longer defined by technical competence alone. Today, success in our profession is equally shaped by ethical leadership, accountability, transparency, risk management, and meaningful stakeholder engagement. As infrastructure projects grow in scale, complexity, and public impact, engineers are increasingly being called upon not just to design and build, but to lead, govern, and safeguard public interest. This evolution places corporate governance at the heart of engineering practice.

For the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ), this moment presents a strategic opportunity. The office of Vice President – Policy, Public Relations and National Development stands as a vital pillar in embedding governance-driven leadership within the profession, shaping policy direction, strengthening institutional credibility, and positioning engineers as trusted leaders in national development.

As we shape the future of our profession, the call is for leadership that understands both the technical depth of engineering and the strategic importance of governance. Leadership that will elevate the voice, integrity, and impact of engineers at national and global levels.

The time has come for engineers to rally behind this vision as the strength of our profession tomorrow depends on the governance we champion today.
