BYD has filed a patent for a new AI-powered safety system designed to spot people or animals hidden under parked vehicles before the car starts moving. The system works by capturing images of the ground beneath the car when it’s parked, using them as a reference, and then comparing them to fresh images before the driver pulls away. By focusing only on what has changed and using AI to tell the difference between living beings and harmless objects like leaves or debris, it aims to cut down on false alarms caused by shadows or weather. The goal is to prevent accidents involving children playing, pets seeking shelter, or adults near the wheels in areas that standard cameras and sensors often miss. While it’s still only a patent and not confirmed for production, the technology fits with BYD’s broader push into smarter safety features like its in-cabin monitoring system. If it reaches future models, underbody detection could add a critical layer of protection for families, pedestrians, and pets beyond traditional backup cameras and parking sensors.
