EQUIPMENT EXPLAINED
JAW CRUSHER VS CONE CRUSHER
They are both crushers, but they perform different jobs in the crushing circuit.
🪨 JAW CRUSHER
PRIMARY CRUSHING
A jaw crusher uses a fixed jaw and moving jaw to compress large feed material.
Best suited to:
Large blasted rock
Large boulders
Primary crushing
Quarry start-up operations
Producing material for secondary crushing
THE PRINCIPLE
FEED → COMPRESS → BREAK → DISCHARGE
Think of the jaw as the front door of the crushing plant.
⚙️ CONE CRUSHER
SECONDARY / TERTIARY CRUSHING
A cone crusher uses a rotating mantle inside a concave to continuously compress and crush material.
Best suited to:
Pre-crushed rock
Secondary crushing
Tighter product sizes
Higher-volume aggregate production
Producing more controlled aggregate shapes and gradations
THE PRINCIPLE
FEED → COMPRESS → CRUSH → CLASSIFY
Think of the cone as the refining stage.
SO WHICH ONE?
Don't ask:
“Which crusher is better?”
Ask:
“What material are we feeding, and what product do we need?”
Consider:
FEED SIZE
How large is the rock entering the machine?
PRODUCT SIZE
What size aggregate are you trying to produce?
PRODUCTION RATE
How many tonnes per hour do you need?
MATERIAL CHARACTERISTICS
What are the rock's hardness, abrasiveness and moisture conditions?
CRUSHING CIRCUIT
Is this primary crushing or secondary/tertiary crushing?
THE ORVISTONE RULE
BIG ROCK STARTS WITH THE JAW.
THE CONE REFINES THE PRODUCT.
The right crushing circuit begins with the rock, the required product and the production target.
