BEFORE EVERY LIFT

SAFE AND CONTROLLED FAÇADE ACCESS

Working at height requires more than reaching the required elevation—it demands a properly selected, installed and controlled access system.

A Suspended Working Platform, also known as a construction cradle or rope suspended platform, provides practical vertical access for:

GLASS VACUUM LIFTING SOLUTIONS
SAFETY IS ENGINEERED BEFORE THE LIFT BEGINS

Handling large glass panels requires more than lifting power—it demands precision, control and uncompromising safety.

Glass vacuum lifters and smart installation robots have transformed façade construction, but safe performance depends on two essential factors: disciplined operation and selecting equipment for the complete lifting condition—not merely the weight of the glass.

BEFORE EVERY LIFT

• Match capacity to the complete condition
Confirm that the rated capacity is suitable for the glass weight, dimensions, orientation and lifting configuration.

• Prepare the glass surface
The contact area must be clean, dry, smooth and compatible with the suction pads.

• Inspect the vacuum system
Check the pads, seals, hoses, connections, valves, gauges, warning systems and power supply.

• Position the pads correctly
Keep suction pads clear of edges, joints, cracks, damaged areas and unsuitable protective films.

• Confirm a stable vacuum
Never raise or move the glass until the required vacuum level has been achieved and remains stable.

• Test low and slow
Perform a controlled test lift at minimal height to verify attachment, balance and stability.

• Secure the lifting area
Keep all personnel outside the lifting zone. No one should ever stand beneath a suspended glass panel.

• Respond immediately
Stop the operation if the vacuum level drops, the glass shifts or any abnormal condition appears.

• Respect operating limits
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding wind, temperature, surface condition and the actual site environment.

STEEL WIRE ROPE
STRENGTH, FLEXIBILITY & SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY

Steel wire rope is one of the most safety-critical components of a suspended working platform. It carries the platform through the traction hoist and works alongside the independent secondary safety system.

According to XPLATFORM’s approved technical specification, our applicable suspended platforms use:

• Nominal diameter: Ø8.6 mm
• Material: Galvanized high-carbon steel
• Construction: Flexible multi-wire construction
• Application: Suspended working platforms
• Compatibility: Approved traction hoist and secondary safety device
• Certification: Traceable certificate confirming rope construction, tensile grade and minimum breaking load

Why does flexibility matter?

The rope must repeatedly pass through the traction hoist while maintaining its strength, diameter stability and effective grip. Flexibility is determined by the wire construction, core, lay direction and compatibility with the complete system—not by how soft the rope feels.

Diameter alone is never enough. An Ø8.6 mm generic lifting rope must not be used unless its construction, certified breaking load and operating characteristics match the approved suspended-platform system.

SUSPENSION MECHANISM
STABILITY IS CALCULATED — NOT ESTIMATED

A counterweighted suspension rig works according to the principle of moments around the most unfavourable fulcrum.

ENGINEERING PRINCIPLE:

Moment = Force × Distance

M = F × d

For adequate stability:

Stabilizing Moment ≥ Overturning Moment

The stabilizing moment is generated by the inboard portion and counterweights, while the overturning moment is created by the suspended load and the outboard portion of the rig.

According to BS EN 1808:2015, Clause 6.5.4.2 and Table 12, the working-stability calculation for a Temporary Suspended Platform must consider:

• Suspended load: 3 × WLL
• Material-hoist load, when applicable: 1.4 × HWLL
• Outboard rig weight: 1.25 × Mo
• Inboard rig weight: 1.0 × Mi
• The most unfavourable combination of forces and fulcrum position

Where:

WLL = Working Load Limit of the platform winch
HWLL = Working Load Limit of the material hoist
Mo = Weight of the outboard portion
Mi = Weight of the inboard portion
d = Horizontal distance from the applicable fulcrum

An important engineering relationship:

Increasing the outboard length increases the overturning moment. Therefore, any change in outreach, suspended load or beam configuration requires the stability calculation to be reviewed.

The standard also requires that:

• Counterweights must be solid, permanently marked with their weight and limited to 25 kg per piece.
• Counterweights must be firmly attached and locked against unauthorized removal.
• Clear assembly and rigging instructions must be permanently fixed to the beam.
• Separate suspension points must be provided for the suspension ropes and secondary safety ropes.
• Temporary suspension-rig components must be reusable and free from hazardous sharp edges or projections.

The required number of counterweights must never be estimated or based on a fixed quantity. It must be determined from the approved rigging configuration, applicable loads, lever-arm distances and stability calculations.

TOE BOARD PROTECTION
A Small Component with a Critical Safety Role

When working at height, safety is not limited to protecting the people inside the suspended platform. Tools and materials must also be prevented from falling and endangering people or property below.

According to BS EN 1808:2015, Clause 7.1.4:

▪ Guardrails, intermediate rails and toe boards shall be fitted around the perimeter of the platform.
▪ For Temporary Suspended Platforms (TSPs), the toe board shall extend at least 150 mm above the platform decking.
▪ Toe boards are not required where the platform is fully clad.
▪ Platform components must not present sharp edges or corners.

The toe board forms the lower part of the platform’s collective protection system. It helps retain tools and materials inside the cradle and reduces the risk of falling objects during façade-access operations.

Important technical distinction:

The toe board is the lower-edge protective barrier—not the walking surface. The platform decking is a separate component and must provide a secure, slip-resistant working surface.
