China has officially activated the world's first commercial thorium-fueled nuclear reactor, according to an announcement from the China National Nuclear Corporation this week. Unlike conventional uranium reactors, the thorium-based molten salt reactor cannot experience meltdowns due to its passive safety design. The facility, located in Gansu Province, produces minimal long-lived radioactive waste and uses abundant thorium rather than scarce uranium. Energy experts suggest this technology could represent a significant advancement for safe, sustainable nuclear power generation.
