Tailored solutions, adapted precisely to the customer’s wishes, are among the specialities of the Austrian steel construction company Waagner-Biro. After a construction period of one-and-a-half years, “The Crystal” was completed as an architectural highlight in the British capital, one of the greenest buildings in the world. The building contains an auditorium and – covering 2,000m2, thus making it the largest in the world – an exhibition on the topics of sustainable urban development and the urban infrastructure of the future. The centre for sustainable urban development is run by Siemens. The property is a prime example of energy efficiency. It uses 50 percent less energy and therefore emits 65 percent less carbon dioxide than comparable buildings. This makes “The Crystal” one of the world’s greenest buildings. Following the completion of the new headquarters of the Cooperative Group, which is currently amongst the greenest buildings in the UK, Waagner-Biro has once again made a crucial contribution to a sustainable showcase project. The scope of services provided by Waagner-Biro’s steel construction division comprises the façade, which is divided into many splitter-type individual surfaces including a steel substructure – in all, a total of around 3,365m². In order to highlight the crystalline and mirroring nature, the outer layer was mounted as flatly as possible with wet-jointed panes and panels. The Crystal is one of three construction projects of Waagner Biro Steel Construction with a connection to the Olympic Games in London: the Austrian steel construction company was also involved in the nearby Stratford Shopping Centre, which served as the entrance to the Olympic Grounds; it built the Olympic Central Park Bridge and realised the Siemens Crystal. These properties are among the excellent local references developed by Waagner Biro, such as the British Museum Great Court and the 30 St Mary Axe (Gherkin) Crown. Place: London
Completion: 2012
Client: Siemens
Architect: Wilkinson Eyre

Situated right on the new Formula 1 circuit in Abu Dhabi, the Yas Marina Hotel offers the racing drivers an impressive sight. The "grid shell", a free-form surface of steel and glass which spans the hotel and parts of the track, has a unique appearance. The design, a vision of the New York firm, Asymptote Architects, was inspired by terms like speed, motion, elegance and spectacle. This inspiration was developed by Waagner-Biro to create a steel and glass structure which radiates ease and elegance. The free-form surface settles over the multistory hotel like a reptilian skin. It rests on only a few V-shaped supports, even though it consists of 2,800 tonnes of steel and 5,100 glass panels. To produce this delicate appearance, each of the 10,700 individual rods had to be as thin as possible - a task that only a few suppliers in the world are capable of. If that wasn’t enough of a challenge, the project was also under extreme time pressure. From the rough sketch of the architect’s first idea, to the project’s completion, took only 18 months; 18 months in which all the technical solutions were developed and implemented by Waagner-Biro. Place: Abu Dhabi/United Arab Emirates
Completion: 2009

Steel and Glass Structures 2021
Project: Cavatina Hall, Bielsko-Biała

Following the acquisition of Waagner Biro Steel and Glass, by the Zeman Group (www.zeman-stahl.com) in August 2020, we continue our success in securing a Joint Venture project. Utilising our design and engineering and project management expertise, supported with the innovative steel manufacturing capabilities of Zeman Steel, The Concert Hall of the complex Cavatina Hall in Bielsko-Biała, Poland is the next engineering challenge, in the same vain as Złote Tarasy in Warsaw, Blob in Eindhoven, among others found on our website: www.wb-sg.com.

In addition to the high design complexity, approx. 1800m2 glazed façade supported by 1756 steel structure elements, connected to almost 870 welded steel nodes (in total ~48.5 To) , the fast track programme is a challenge in itself. After completing the design phase, we have already moved on to the implementation phase.

In September 2021, the Bielsko concert hall intends to welcome first guests - artists and audience.

Waagner Biro have finished the Baku New Airport Terminal in 2013.
https://lnkd.in/e4Au6MU

7 years later, at the end of 2020, Waagner Biro Steel and Glass got a request from the client to replace a couple of glass panels which were damaged accidently. Despite the pandemic situation we could manage to organize the glass panels and the associated appertaining façade fixing parts. The parts were delivered in early 2021 to Baku and the facade of the Baku Airport is now renewed to the client´s satisfaction.

We at Waagner Biro Steel and Glass are not just building new facades and steel & glass structures. We also take care of the maintenance & service of our projects.
