We are pleased to share a recent application using an intrinsically safe cable resistance thermometer (Pt100) for engine temperature sensing in the marine sector.

In marine environments, maintaining optimal engine temperature is critical for performance, safety, and reliability. Our solution provides accurate and continuous temperature measurement, helping prevent overheating and ensuring smooth engine operation even under demanding conditions.
The temperature signal from the XI-TOPE4 Cable resistance thermometer (Pt100) is transmitted to PR 9116B, where it is isolated and converted into a standard analog output signal. This analog signal is then sent to the PLC for monitoring & control.

Generator Engine Monitoring Solution

Devices Used:

• PR Electronics 5714 Universal Transmitter

In generator applications, monitoring engine temperature and oil pressure is critical for reliable performance and to avoid unexpected shutdowns.

In this setup, the temperature sensor (TOPE500) is connected directly to the PR Electronics 5714, which acts as a signal conditioner and display unit. The 5714 receives the temperature input (RTD/TC), provides a local display of the measured value, and simultaneously converts it into a standard 4–20 mA analog signal for transmission to the PLC.

• Input to 5714: RTD / Thermocouple (temperature sensor)

The pressure transmitter measures relative and absolute (on request) pressure in liquids and gases. The sensor converts pressure into a signal that is amplified, digitized, and processed. Instead of an analog output, it uses an IO-Link digital interface (v1.1) for bidirectional communication with an IO-Link master, allowing access to process data, parameters, diagnostics, and status via IODD. The device has two green LEDs that stay on when powered and flash once an IO-Link connection is established.

• Metallic thin film strain gauges measuring principle.
• Process connections: G, NPT in ¼”, G ¾” with hygienic flush diaphragm or clamp according to DIN 32676
• Measuring ranges for relative pressure from - 0.4…+ 0.4 bar up to - 1…+ 12.0 bar
• Available switching functions: PNP or NPN
• Access to measured value, device status and settings via IO-Link interface, very easy sensor replacement.

The pressure transmitter DMP 457 has been especially designed for rough conditions occurring especially in shipbuilding and offshore applications. All gaseous and liquid media, which are compatible with stainless steel 1.4404 (316L) respectively can be used.

Sensor element is a piezoresistive stainless steel sensor with high accuracy and excellent long-term stability. In order to meet the special requirements for shipbuilding and offshore applications extensive tests had to be passed to get the Lloyd´s Register, Germanischer Lloyd (GL), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Bureau Veritas (BV) and China Classification Society (CCS) approvals.

The process pressure transmitter XMP i has been especially designed for the process industry and measures vacuum, gauge and absolute pressure ranges of gases, steam, fluids and dust up to 600 bar.

Different process connections such as threads and fl**ges with an internal or flush welded diaphragm are available and can be combined with a cooling element for media temperatures up to 300°C. The transmitter is as a standard equipped with HART®-communication; the customer can choose between a two chamber aluminum die cast case or a stainless field housing.

The process pressure transmitter XMP ci measures the pressure of gases, steam, dust and fluids. The special-developed capacitive ceramic sensor for this transmitter has a high overpressure capability and excellent media stability.

Several process connections e.g. thread or fl**ge are available. The transmitter is as a standard equipped with HART®-communication, the customer can choose between a two chamber aluminum die cast case or a stainless field housing.
