📛 PLAYSTATION UPDATE: PS5 Owners Cancel PS Plus to Protest Discs Ending, but Analysts Say It Won't Work 📉

⭕ The backlash against Sony’s controversial decision to end the production of physical game discs by 2028 is intensifying. The ‘Don’t Kill the Disc’ petition has now surpassed 200,000 signatures. Furthermore, PS5 users are protesting by actively cancelling their PlayStation Plus subscriptions and sharing screenshots of their cancellations across social media.

⭕ However, analysts say this protest is destined to fail. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Japanese game industry consultancy Kantan Games, told IGN that Sony will not reverse this decision. "They of course knew what the online reaction would look like, and they now wait for this storm to pass," he stated.

⭕ He pointed out that even if 500,000 people cancelled their PS Plus subscriptions, it would only represent a 1% drop in a service that boasts 50 million active subscribers—a drop in the ocean that won't force Sony to rethink.

⭕ The bottom line is purely economic; the profit margins on digital sales are far too lucrative. For a physical third-party game, Sony receives about a 15% cut, but for a digital sale via the PlayStation Store, that cut doubles to 30% (roughly $21 on a $70 game). For their own first-party titles sold digitally, Sony keeps 100% of the revenue, completely eliminating manufacturing, logistics, and retailer margins.

⭕ With profit margins reportedly weak in recent years, analysts conclude that an all-digital future simply makes too much financial sense for Sony, meaning a reversal of the disc cancellation is highly unlikely.
