With more wells sitting idle than usual across the industry, well preservation has moved up the priority list for a lot of integrity teams โ and rightly so.
Preservation during extended shutdowns is not a new challenge, but it's one that's easy to underestimate. Corrosion inhibitor programmes designed for flowing wells don't translate directly to static conditions. Barrier status documented at shutdown reflects a point in time that gets less accurate with every week that passes. Monitoring intervals that were acceptable during normal operations may not be sufficient for wells that have been idle for months.
The wells that will restart cleanly are the ones being actively managed now โ with defined preservation programmes, updated barrier status records, and monitoring calibrated to actual well risk.
At AIE, we work with well integrity and operations teams on preservation programme reviews, barrier assessments, and restart readiness for shut-in well stocks. We also deliver Well Integrity Management training covering shutdown and preservation scenarios.
