🟡 How a Spirit Level Works – Complete Guide
A spirit level (also called a bubble level) is a simple but essential measuring tool used in construction, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and surveying to determine whether a surface is perfectly level (horizontal), plumb (vertical), or set at a 45° angle. It contains sealed vials filled with liquid and an air bubble. When the bubble is centered between the marked lines, the surface is correctly aligned.
Main Parts:
Vertical Vial: Checks vertical (plumb) alignment.
Horizontal Vial: Checks horizontal level surfaces.
45° Vial: Used for checking 45-degree angles.
Level Body: Strong frame that protects the vials and ensures accurate readings.
How to Read It:
✅ Bubble centered between the lines = Surface is level.
⬅️ Bubble moves to one side = That side is higher, and the opposite side is lower.
➡️ Adjust the surface until the bubble returns to the center.
How to Use a Spirit Level:
1. Place the level on the surface.
2. Observe the bubble in the appropriate vial.
3. Adjust the object until the bubble is centered.
4. Recheck from different positions for maximum accuracy.
Applications:
Brick and block masonry
Tile installation
Door and window fitting
Concrete formwork
Cabinet installation
Plumbing work
Steel structure alignment
Surveying and general construction
Pro Tips:
Keep the level clean and free from dust.
Store it safely to protect the vials.
Verify readings by checking from both directions.
Avoid using the level as a hammer or pry bar.
