20 REAL-WORLD LAND SURVEYOR INTERVIEW QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
1. Your GNSS receiver suddenly loses FIX during a boundary survey. What would you do?
Answer: I would stop recording observations, check satellite availability and PDOP, inspect the base station and radio link, move to a location with a clearer sky view if necessary, and only continue once a FIX solution is restored. If the issue persists, I would use an alternative survey method such as a Total Station.
2. Your traverse does not close within the required tolerance. How would you resolve it?
Answer: I would review field notes, check instrument setup, verify angle and distance measurements, identify possible blunders, repeat suspicious observations if necessary, and perform a proper traverse adjustment before accepting the results.
3. A client disputes the location of a property boundary. How would you handle it?
Answer: I would remain professional, review the legal survey documents and previous survey records, verify the boundary on-site, explain the findings with evidence, and advise the client according to applicable laws and professional standards.
4. How do you ensure the quality of your survey data?
Answer: I perform instrument calibration, independent checks, redundant observations, closure tests, coordinate verification, and thorough office quality control before submitting any deliverables.
5. Describe a challenging surveying project you've completed.
