Germany's renewable energy has reached 52.6% of total electricity generation in 2023, a significant increase from the previous year.

In 2023, total electricity generation in Germany is 515 billion kWh. Renewable energy sources generate 268 billion kWh, which is 52.6% of electricity generation (excluding pumped storage) and 50.6% of electricity consumption (including imported electricity, excluding pumped storage).

The share of renewable energies increased significantly compared to 2022, and this figure will become even higher - 80%, by 2045. Germany’s Climate Law sets out the framework for reaching net zero emissions by 2045. In order to achieve the ambitious Energiewende by 2030, 80% of all electricity supply will need to come from renewable energy sources (and 100% by 2035) and coal is to be completely phased out.

To achieve these goals, the German federal government is making every effort to massively accelerate the expansion of renewable energy. Looking down the chart, new energy PV capacity rose by more than a fifth in 2023, and they have set even higher expansion targets for PV: 13 GW of solar power will be added by 2024, and 18 GW of solar power will be added by 2025. Construction will more than triple by 2026.

Besides, other renewable energies have also been given different expansion targets. Substantially, such a massive transition demands collective and collaborative efforts from all sectors.
