Last Monday Dr.Arjan Xhelaj the CEO for RASH as member of GÉANT General Assembly has the pleasure together with other colleges from GÉANT Board, Mr.Ronan Byrne and Ecxec Paul Rose to be part of the EU–Western Balkans Investment Forum in Tirana where the European Commission, GÉANT, and 4iG Group signed a joint declaration confirming their shared commitment to advancing secure, high-capacity digital infrastructure and strengthening connectivity across the SEE region

Big steps for digital connectivity in the Western Balkans 🌐

At the EU–Western Balkans Investment Forum in Tirana this week, the European Commission, GÉANT, and 4iG Group signed a joint declaration confirming their shared commitment to advancing secure, high-capacity digital infrastructure and strengthening connectivity across the region.

The declaration reaffirms EU partners’ support for the EAGLE (Egypt–Albania Gateway Link to Europe) submarine data cable investment connecting Albania and Egypt—alongside the newly announced regional terrestrial digital backbone.

Together, these investments will:
🔸 Connect the Western Balkans to Europe’s major data hubs
🔸 Strengthen and (R&E) networks with resilient, inclusive connectivity
🔸 Establish a new digital gateway linking Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa
🔸 Provide the foundation for innovation, AI deployment, and economic growth

As Ronan Byrne (GÉANT Board member and CEO of HEAnet) said on the occasion:

“The Western Balkans are at a pivotal juncture in their digital transformation journey. A growing foundation of research and education networks, emerging high-performance computing capacity, and a dynamic innovation ecosystem are positioning the region to play a vital role in Europe’s digital future. GÉANT welcomes and endorses the European Commission’s announcement and its intent to advance the Western Balkans Digital Backbone initiative — a crucial step toward a more resilient, inclusive, and enhanced connectivity across the region, allowing for a full integration into the pan-European GÉANT network.”

GÉANT’s GN4-3N project is a finalist in the European Digital Connectivity Awards 2025 🎉

We’re honoured to be nominated in the “Cross-border and international connectivity” category, recognising the GN4-3N project’s role in building a more inclusive, resilient, and future-proof network infrastructure for the European & community.

Co-funded by the EU and Europe’s NRENs, GN4-3N delivered the most extensive restructuring of the GÉANT backbone network in over a decade.

Key results include:
🔹 Over 26,000 km of dark fibre and spectrum lit
🔹 Connectivity extended to 34 countries
🔹 405 new Infinera nodes installed
🔹 69 new routes deployed

But GN4-3N is more than these numbers. It’s about enabling the next generation of data-intensive and research collaboration, bridging the digital divide, advancing European sovereignty, and shaping Europe's digital future.
