A standard barrel of crude oil contains 42 gallons. Refining it produces more.

Processing gain is the volume increase that occurs when crude oil is broken down into lighter hydrocarbon fractions — gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, LPG. Each fraction carries lower density than the crude it originated from. Lower density means greater volume.

The physics are consistent across every refinery in operation today.

42 gallons enter. Roughly 44 to 45 gallons leave.

This is not inefficiency. This is the chemistry the entire downstream value chain is built on.
