As part of our project for the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile, Werner and Max recently visited the La Silla site to assess the existing infrastructure for the cooling, heating, and hot water supply – and to define the next steps for improving energy efficiency.

The plan includes the implementation of new, automated systems to reduce energy consumption, along with the integration of a photovoltaic system – enabling the direct use of solar energy on site.

In close collaboration with the client, key functions and safety mechanisms were aligned – paving the way for a resilient and future-ready system at one of the most extraordinary locations on Earth. 🌟🌎

A direct link between research, plant construction and operation: the district heating plant in Graz, Austria. The plant - built by SOLID - supplies most of the city's district heating, while different collector types are operating under real conditions.

💡𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Unique field test of ten different collector types from seven manufacturers, including flat plate, parabolic-trough and heat pipe collectors.

🔧 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 & 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: ESCo operation with heat supply to the local utility. The plant has a nominal heating capacity of 5 750 kW.

🌱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Solar hot water supply for around 8 000 citizens of Graz. More than 740 tons of CO2 are saved each year.

The test field allows the evaluation of collector performance and to constantly improve quality and increase efficiency. A win-win effect for solar research and industry.🙌

Last Friday, an excursion to our solar plant in Mürzzuschlag took place, organized by Austria Solar. Christian Holter led a tour of the plant and shared valuable technical know-how with the participants, while Hubert Neureuter provided insights into the partnership between the Mürzzuschlag municipal utilities and SOLID, along with revealing information about their work with solar district heating.🙌☀️

Here’s a look at some of our key projects driving renewable energy forward:

💡 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁: An EU-funded initiative focused on advancing Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) technology, combining research and practical solutions for safer, cost-effective energy storage. We’re proud to be a demonstrator with our 𝗕𝗶𝗴𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘃𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 and recently visited an underground storage tank in Hechingen (Picture 2).

💡 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗗𝗛: Funded by the European LIFE program, this project develops business models for integrating low-quality heat into district heating networks. We recently joined a general assembly in Zagreb to discuss progress and potential solutions.

💡 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗸: A free, open-source tool for monitoring solar thermal systems, supporting quality assurance and efficiency assessment. It includes a pre-configured demo plant with one year of open measurement data from the district heating plant in Graz, Austria (Picture 3). We’re currently revising the software documentation and updating the tool’s website.

Celebrating a decade of SOLID's solar cooling system at the Desert Mountain High School in Arizona! ☀️ 🥳

We are thrilled to announce that the collaborative project between SOLID and TIGI Ball Corporation has been shortlisted as one of the top 5 projects for the International Energy Agency Solar Heating Programme (IEA SHC) 2024 SHC SOLAR AWARD! 🏆

The award recognizes outstanding projects that reduce costs and emissions by intergrating solar thermal technologies into industrial processes. Our project Ball Corporation in Fairfield, California exemplifies the power of solar thermal solutions. This facility, one of the world’s largest producers of aluminum beverage cans, now produces up to 8 million cans daily using sustainable solar heat.
