1974 – A Bold Decision in Uncertain Times

The 1970s were shaped by oil crises, uncertainty and pressure on global industries.

Yet BENTELER remained adaptable. While the global steel market suffered, the company increasingly shifted its focus towards high-quality speciality steels and speciality tubes.

The willingness to invest also remained high during this period. In 1974, BENTELER opened its own electric steel mill in Lingen, Germany.

The investment strengthened independence in steel production and secured greater control over quality and supply.

Some of the most important decisions are made in the most challenging times.

1958 – Casting the Future

In 1958, BENTELER made a pioneering decision in steel production. By introducing continuous casting – a process in which molten steel is cast into endless strands rather than the traditional ingots – on a scale likely unmatched anywhere in the world at the time, the company transformed the way steel was produced.

The breakthrough, which offered higher efficiency, improved steel quality and a completely new level of industrial capability, didn’t happen by accident. The company´s owners at the time, Erich and Helmut Benteler had travelled extensively, especially to the United States, studying emerging industrial technologies and production methods.

Powered by the company’s own pioneering spirit and expanding electric steel capacities, BENTELER did more than producing steel. It was casting the future of its business.

In the aftermath of World War II, BENTELER faced a reality shaped by destruction and scarcity. Facilities had been damaged, machinery had been commandeered, and raw materials were in short supply.

But rebuilding started quickly – step by step. Production resumed within months. By the end of 1946, around 600 employees were once again producing what was urgently needed at the time: pots, agricultural tools and sewing machine frames.

What mattered was not the product itself, but the resilience behind it. Employees helped lay the foundation for BENTELER's future through their determination to keep moving forward.

That resilience became part of our company’s DNA.

🔄 What does successful automation look like in practice?

At our Shenyang plant, an automated warehouse system and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) help make material supply safer, more efficient and easier to plan.

But this project is about more than technology. It shows what can happen when local expertise and global collaboration come together to solve real operational challenges.

Key takeaways from the project:

Automation creates the greatest value when it is fully integrated into existing processes.

Close collaboration between plant teams, Supply Chain Management and Global IT accelerates implementation.

Solutions developed for one location can provide valuable insights for others across the network.

For us, Shenyang is not only an example of technological progress but also of a mindset: continuously improving processes, learning from each other and scaling successful approaches where they create value.

Two tech shows, one goal: strengthening partnerships through innovation.

Our team in Pune recently represented BENTELER at two major industry events in India, hosted by Honda Cars India and Hyundai.

At both events, we showcased selected technologies, manufacturing capabilities, and automotive solutions while engaging directly with decision-makers, development leaders, and industry experts.

These events provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen our partnerships, exchange perspectives on future mobility solutions, and showcase how BENTELER combines engineering expertise and manufacturing capabilities to support customers worldwide.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making these events a success.

1930s – Changing gears

During the 1930s, economic uncertainty and collapsing demand created major challenges for industry across Germany. While BENTELER faced the same challenges, the decade also marked a turning point for the company: its entry into the automotive industry.

What began with exhaust tubes for Ford Eifel would eventually evolve into chassis systems, structural components and complex automotive technologies.

Looking back, it was one of the defining moments in the company's history and the beginning of a new chapter for BENTELER.

1923 – A Factory Built on Belief

In 1923, BENTELER made a bold investment in its future.

Across 28 hectares in Schloß Neuhaus near Paderborn, Germany, the company built a modern tube production site that significantly expanded its capacity.

At a time of economic uncertainty, BENTELER chose not to stand still. The site would go on to become one of the most important locations in the company’s history.

Growing forward, together

As BENTELER celebrates its 150th anniversary, colleagues around the world continue to shape a sustainable future.

In Burgos, Spain, employees planted 40 native trees as part of Sustainability Day activities, supporting local biodiversity and creating a greener environment around the plant.

In Pune, India, employees, leaders and guests planted 150 trees in the village of Dehu. One for every year of BENTELER's history. Under the motto "From Steel to Soil," the initiative connected our past with our future and highlighted the importance of long-term responsibility.

Different locations, different initiatives – but one shared commitment: turning sustainability ambitions into meaningful local action.

1914 – The Tube That Changed Everything

At first glance, it seemed simple: a “window bar made from metal tube” registered with the patent office.

Its impact, however, would go on to shape the company for decades.

Steel tubes opened the door to entirely new markets – from bicycles and railways to the emerging automotive industry. And in doing so, BENTELER transformed into an industrial enterprise.

Sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs start with something surprisingly small.
