The 1883 Krakatoa eruption produced a sound heard 4,800 km away in Rodriguez Island, near Mauritius - the furthest any sound has ever been documented in human history.

The pressure wave circled the Earth at least three times, detected on barometers worldwide.
At the source, the estimated sound level was approximately 310 dB - so loud it would have caused instant death within hundreds of kilometres.

For comparison, a jet engine at 30 metres is 150 dB.
Krakatoa was roughly 10 trillion times more powerful.

WiFi routers constantly broadcast signals that bounce off human bodies.
The way those signals reflect depends on body shape, gait, and movement patterns.

On August 12 2026, researchers demonstrated that standard WiFi signals can identify specific individuals with near-perfect accuracy - using only the router already in the room.

No camera. No app. No device on the person.

Every WiFi network you walk past is now potentially an identification system.
The infrastructure already exists. The question is who has access to the data.

Five numbers every engineer should be able to estimate without a calculator:

1. Speed of sound in air: ~340 m/s (useful in acoustics, explosions, sonic booms)
2. Atmospheric pressure: ~100 kPa or 1 bar (baseline for all pressure engineering)
3. Density of water: 1,000 kg/m3 (anchors all fluid calculations)
4. Young's modulus of steel: ~200 GPa (baseline for all structural stiffness)
5. Thermal conductivity of copper: ~400 W/(m·K) (benchmark for all heat transfer)

Know these five and you can sanity-check almost any engineering calculation in your head.

The Rehbinder effect in physics is the reduction in the hardness and ductility of a material, particularly metals, by a surfactant film. The effect is named for Soviet scientist Piotr Aleksandrovich Rehbinder, who discovered the effect in 1928.
