Starting May 3 to May 8, the General Assembly of the EGU will be held here in Vienna with 21.000 Earth Scientists attending. For the past 16 years, I have been in charge of preparing a special mineral and fossil exhibit. I have 6 showcases with 14 floors to fill! This year's theme is "Rocks telling Tales" Anyone attending this international meeting can visit me in the main hall next to NASA.
Rocks telling Tales
Our Earth has been telling stories for about 4,5 billion years. Every single rock, may it be a beach pebble or a chip of gravel, has a story to reveal. But some of these tales are very special, revealing insights into the early days of our earth. Others tell stories about our universe. And fossils tell the story of evolution. Although fossils may be common, it still needs very special circumstances for animals or plants to be preserved over millions of years. And so, every single fossil can be considered special: a miracle of nature at its best!
This year’s EGU Special Exhibition will feature rocks and fossils documenting a period of almost 3 billion years: from the early beginnings to the story of life!
