The event kicked off with a screening of the documentary HOLY S**T! Can P**p Save the World?, offering deep insights into human wastewater problems and showcasing global best practices for utilizing human waste.
Sarah Tariq Gilani (Project and Communications Manager, alchemia-nova) presented the DEEP PURPLE project, detailing our demo sites, processes, and five bio-based products. Following the presentation, we enjoyed the documentary and a compelling panel discussion.
Panelists included:
Rubén Abruña (Director, Holy S**t: How P**p Can Save The World? https://lnkd.in/eEuPEN7y )
Heinz Gattringer (Senior Developer, alchemia-nova)
Veronika Reinberg (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin, ÖGUT - Österreichische Gesellschaft für Umwelt und Technik)
Nikolaos Bogianzidis (Founder and CEO, öKlo GmbH)
Moderated by Helen Dolinšek (Project Manager and Stakeholder Engagement Specialist, alchemia-nova), the discussion covered:
🔄 Feasibility of reusing waste for a circular, bio-based economy
⚖️ Social and legal barriers
🔬 Diverse applications of biowaste
🌱 Importance of nutrient management
💧 Public perception and behavior
🌎 Technological and environmental impacts
⚠️ Need to exclude contaminants
🌐 Local and global waste management challenges
The event concluded with an interactive display of DEEP PURPLE bio-based products and a social acceptance study, emphasizing the importance of sustainable waste management practices and innovative solutions.

CONVERSION OF DILUTED MIXED URBAN BIO-WASTES INTO SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS IN FLEXIBLE PURPLEPHOTOBIOREFINERIES

Horizon 2020 Call: H2020-BBI-JTI-2018 (H2020-BBI-JTI-2018) Topic: BBI.2018.SO1.D2 Type of action: BBI-IA-DEMO. Grant agreement No 837998.

Up to 138 million tons of bio-waste, coming from wastewater treatment and urban organic food, are generated annually within the EU1. It´s estimated that almost 75% of this waste is destined forincineration or landfilling, which has massive associated environmental and economic costs. Moreover, a high percentage of this waste still retains great value as a potential source of recycled materials. Wastewater, for example, contains valuable components such as cellulose and nutrients that can be used as feedstock for many applications.
