📣 Australia's first Indigenous surgeon and Worimi man, Professor Kelvin Kong, has been awarded NAIDOC Person of the Year.

Dr Kong is an Otolaryngology, Head and Neck surgeon who specialises in middle-ear disease in Indigenous children in remote Aboriginal communities and is an advocate for dismantling the health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children.

❝ Determined to change the statistics, Dr Kong has dedicated his career to early intervention. Dr Kong says “If we can reduce the risk of hearing loss, we can have a direct impact on a child's ability to learn and develop. The change that we see is remarkable - we can take them from limited hearing and language skills to fully functioning teenagers with real employment prospects”. ❞

❗ The Australasian Surgical Students’ Association is excited to be running our new study - SOLSTICE: perceptionS Of medicaL Students Towards surgICal spEcialties in Australia ❗

Our study aims to investigate the current attitudes and perceptions of medical students in Australia towards a career in surgery. We invite all medical students in Australia to participate in this online 10 minute survey which will help us find out how to improve YOUR experiences in surgery throughout medical school.

This study is led by Professor Marc Gladman, alongside A/ Professor Rhea Liang and the Australasian Surgical Students’ Association team.
