Your slab’s down. Three months later, still no frame. What’s going on?

Construction delays happen. Weather, material availability, trade scheduling and unforeseen circumstances can all affect progress.

Planning to build, extend or renovate? Most budget blowouts start with gaps in the contract. Here are six things worth checking before you sign, drawn from 25 years in the industry.

Don’t skim your contract. Read every page, including specs and allowances, and note anything unclear, unfamiliar or that makes you uneasy. Your contract meeting is your time to get answers before you sign. Save this for when you’re comparing quotes.

Design for the life you have today, but plan for the life you might have tomorrow.

Kids grow up, parents get older, working arrangements change and families evolve.

A study today could become a bedroom tomorrow. A second living area could become a home office, teenage retreat or space for an ageing parent.

For me, that’s where the future of Australian home design is heading.

Not necessarily bigger homes. Smarter homes that perform better, adapt over time and continue to work as our lives change.
