Australia's Battery Trust Gap πŸ”‹

The batteries Australians ask for aren't always the batteries installers choose.

Our latest data revealed something interesting:

βœ… Goodwe is highly preferred by consumers and installers.

βœ… Sungrow performs strongly across both groups.

⚑ Tesla remains one of the most requested battery brands by homeowners.

πŸ‘· Yet installers are choosing Goodwe and Sungrow far more often.

Meanwhile...

πŸ“ˆ Sigenergy is seeing stronger installer adoption than consumer demand would suggest.

Why the disconnect?

Because consumers buy based on advertising, reviews and brand recognition.

Installers buy based on what they have to support for the next 10 years.

That's a very different decision.

Which battery brand would you choose for your own home?

How much should battery storage actually cost?

The answer depends on which brand you're looking at.

When we compared retail battery module pricing, we found a huge spread in cost per kWh.

Cheapest:

βœ… SAJ β€” $220/kWh

βœ… Goodwe Lynx F β€” $222/kWh

βœ… Fox ESS CQ6 β€” $231/kWh

Most expensive:

⚠️ Enphase β€” $734/kWh

⚠️ SolarEdge β€” $675/kWh

⚠️ Tesla β€” $555/kWh

That's more than a 3x difference between the highest and lowest-priced batteries.

But here's the catch.

Price per kWh only tells part of the story.

You still need to consider:

β€’ Warranty

β€’ Backup functionality

β€’ Inverter compatibility

β€’ Software platform

β€’ Brand support

β€’ Installer network

β€’ Virtual Power Plant compatibility

The cheapest battery isn't always the best value.

And the most expensive battery isn't automatically the best battery.

The smart buyers compare both price and reputation before making a decision.

The Federal Battery Rebate dropped.

But Sungrow battery pricing just dropped by up to **31.5%**.

That's the part nobody is talking about.

Most people assume a lower rebate automatically means batteries become less attractive.

But when we looked at battery module pricing, several manufacturers appear to have reduced prices significantly:

⬇️ Sungrow SBR: 31.5%

⬇️ Sungrow SBH: 27.2%

⬇️ Fox ESS CQ6: 18.5%

⬇️ Anker Solix: 16.4%

⬇️ SolarEdge: 15.5%

⬇️ Tesla: 5.7%

Important:

These are battery module prices only.

They don't include installation, inverters, rebates, switchboard upgrades or site-specific costs.

But the trend is interesting.

Some manufacturers may be absorbing part of the rebate reduction themselves.

Which means the real question isn't:

"Did the rebate go down?"

It's:

"Which battery is now the best value?"

Because cheapest $/kWh isn't always the winner.

Warranty.

Backup capability.

Inverter compatibility.

Software.

Local support.

Installed price.

All matter.

The battery market just got more competitive.

And battery buyers now need better comparisons than ever.

Would you buy the cheapest battery on the marketβ€”or pay more for a stronger ecosystem and warranty?

Most people looking at home batteries get offered a "cheaper price" with a
VPP deal attached β€” and they have no idea what they've agreed to until after
installation.

I made this video to fix that.

In 4 minutes I cover:

β†’ How Virtual Power Plants actually work
β†’ Why the same battery shows two different prices (and which one's real)
β†’ AGL vs Origin vs Engie vs Powow vs Energy Australia β€” what each actually pays
β†’ NSW, SA, VIC, QLD and WA state rebates explained plainly
β†’ Amber Electric β€” completely different product, not right for everyone
β†’ 5 questions to ask ANY installer before you sign
β†’ And when the right answer is actually NO VPP at all

If you've got solar and battery on your radar in 2026, watch this first.

Quick question for anyone who's been quoted a battery system recently:

Did your installer mention the words "startup voltage"?

If the answer is no β€” you're not alone. Almost nobody does.

It's the spec that tells you how early your battery wakes up in the morning. And it makes a real difference in winter, on cloudy days, and especially if you've got an older solar setup.

We wrote the explainer we wish more installers gave their customers before signing a contract.

Already have solar and thinking about adding a battery?

There are TWO upgrade paths.

Most installers will only show you one.

**Path A β€” Replace your inverter**
New hybrid inverter + battery. Everything through one unit. Best for modern high-voltage strings.

**Path B β€” Keep your existing inverter**
Add a battery inverter on the AC side. Your solar stays exactly as it is. Often the smarter (and cheaper) choice for homes with older systems.

Which one suits your setup depends on a number that nobody explains: startup voltage.

We've broken down both paths β€” with honest pros and cons and real installed pricing β€” on the Jousto blog.

Most battery quotes include:
βœ… System size (kWh)
βœ… Brand name
βœ… Price
βœ… Warranty

Most battery quotes DON'T include:
❌ Startup voltage

That's the number that determines how early your battery starts charging every morning.

In winter. On cloudy days. On your east-west roof. On your 10-year-old solar system.

We've written the plain-English explainer that your installer should have given you before you signed anything.

No jargon. No pitch. Just the stuff you need to know.

Most Aussies buying a home battery get the size wrong. πŸ”‹

Not because they're not doing their research β€” but because the advice out there is vague, brand-biased, or just flat-out oversimplified.

"Get a 10kWh battery" isn't advice. It's a guess.

The right battery size depends on:

β†’ Your overnight consumption β€” how much power you actually use after dark β†’ Your inverter demand β€” the peak load your system needs to handle β†’ Arbitrage maths β€” storing cheap solar to avoid peak grid rates β†’ EV charging β€” if you're charging a car at home, your whole sizing equation changes

We wrote a proper guide on this. No fluff, no brand pushing β€” just real data and real maths from 20+ years in the industry.
