How does magnesium helps ewes keep going during lambing? The uterus is a smooth muscle, and magnesium plays an important role in the signals that keep it contracting. On rapidly growing green feed, high potassium levels can reduce magnesium availability. Without enough available magnesium, uterine contractions can weaken and a ewe can appear to simply run out of steam. Rob Bell explains why magnesium matters at lambing and why the form of magnesium you provide is just as important as the amount.

Rob Bell explains how this potassium-magnesium interaction can affect normal rumen contractions in lambing ewes and, in more serious cases, lead to stumbling, neurological symptoms and even bloat-like outcomes. And why simply having magnesium on the label doesn’t necessarily mean it’s available to the animal.
