Oceanic Research Institute

Oceanic Research Institute (ORI) is the world’s first independent, fully sustainable oceanic research organisation, using traditional wooden sailing vessels with 100% renewable energy generated on board with zero carbon and acoustic emissions. Zero acoustic emissions is a vital scientific innovation for safe research with whales, dolphins and other marine mammals, who are vulnerable to acoustic trauma.

The ORI fleet of Research Expedition Vessels (REV) is a flagship sustainability project, leading the way for sustainable futures of ocean science, and marine conservation. We are committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and will be active participants in the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) - to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health.

Based in Ballina-Byron we will operate globally in under-researched and climate sensitive regions (e.g. melting glaciers in Arctic East Greenland, Pacific Islands threatened with inundation, coral reefs). ORI’s Research Committee of world-renowned international scientists will address the impacts of climate change on oceanic and coastal environments through global collaborative research across three themes: clean energy, healthy oceans, sustainable operations.

ORI is Australia’s only independent, Approved Research Institute for Oceanic Research. ORI is a Registered Australian Charity (ACNC) with ATO-endorsed DGR status, meaning donations to ORI are fully tax-deductible.
