POST 7: THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE ā ENGINEERING THE IMPOSSIBLE DOME
In 532 AD, Emperor Justinian I commissioned two of the greatest engineering minds of the Byzantine world to create a building unlike anything that had come before.
Their names were Anthemius of Tralles, a mathematician and physicist, and Isidore of Miletus, a mathematician and engineer.
Their challenge was extraordinary:
How do you support a vast circular dome over a square building?
Their answer was the pendentive.
Four curved triangular surfaces transferred the enormous forces from the base of the dome into four massive supporting piers. The solution allowed the spaces beneath the dome to remain remarkably openāand created the impression that the dome was floating above the building.
The result was Hagia Sophia.
Completed in 537 AD, its scale and structural daring changed the course of architecture. The building united mathematics, geometry and construction on a scale the world had rarely seen.
More than 1,400 years later, Hagia Sophia still stands.
The great lesson of Byzantine engineering was not simply how to build bigger.
It was how to make forces flow.
