I started Aerial Acquisitions over 10 years ago with the aim to make high resolution aerial photography affordable to everyone. Over the 10 years we captured thousands of square kilometres of aerial imagery (Colour, multi-spectral, and thermal) on projects ranging from Antarctica, to tropical Nth Queensland, and across all sectors including mining, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, and government sectors.

Being a small company we always ran on a shoestring budget, but punched well above our weight in innovation stakes. When most of the industry was still flying large format film cameras, we were flying one of the first medium format digital cameras. A few years later we integrated one of the first 6 band multi-spectral cameras into a manned aircraft with a whopping 1mpxl resolution per band! This was followed by a custom 5 camera oblique mapping system for city wide 3D modeling and a thermal mapping system for large area thermal surveys. Finally all of this experience and innovation culminated in the development of our portable mapping systems for light aircraft.

However at the beginning of this month Aerial Acquisitions has closed its doors after being acquired by another entity Xmap. I will be continuing on as a director of Xmap and Xmap's focus will be on the leasing of our portable mapping systems around the world and data capture services.

Our new website is still under development but can be found at www.xmap.com.au

Here are a few of the aircraft we have used to carry out aerial survey work across Australia using our portable mapping pods. The squirrel B3 in the bottom right was fitted with one of our pods to carry our survey flights in Antartica.

Our portable mapping pods were involved in an interesting project over the weekend near Lithgow in NSW. We are looking to map tree mortality caused by the Sirex Wood Wasp, using high resolution imagery. Will update you on our progress.

One of our mapping pod's fitted to squirrel B3 after a successful test flight. I haven't done much flying in helicopters, but I could get used to it!
