The Albanese Labor Government knows Australia needs more skilled tradies like carpenters to build more homes, that’s why we’ve ramped up the apprenticeship system to encourage more apprentices, while also supporting employers to help offset the training costs.

Our new Priority Hiring Incentive better tailors financial support for employers like Beach House Stairs in Batemans Bay (pictured).

Employers that engage an Australian Apprentice in a priority occupation from 1 July 2024 may now be eligible to claim up to $5,000 to help subsidise costs.

Apprentices undertaking training in priority areas will be eligible for an additional $2,000 ($5,000 in total) to assist with cost-of-living pressures and incentivise them to finish their training.

The Federal Government is working with states and territories to deliver an additional 15,000 Fee-Free TAFE and vocational education and training places to support the construction sector over two years from 1 January 2025.
