Data shows that more than 4 million Australian homes have rooftop solar systems, giving Australia one of the highest rates of residential solar adoption in the world. On particularly sunny days, solar energy can supply a large share of the grid's electricity needs, causing wholesale power prices to fall to zero or even turn negative as solar generation floods the market.

In response to this growing oversupply, some electricity providers and government backed programs are offering households up to three hours of free electricity each day during peak solar production periods. Plans to construct a 400 megawatt, four-hour battery between two solar farms in north-east Victoria have been waved through the federal EPBC queue.

“Australians have installed more than 10 GWh of home battery storage in just 10 months.

That's roughly equivalent to 70x the storage capacity of the Hornsdale Power Reserve - the world's biggest battery when it was commissioned in 2017.

This surge in home batteries follows the launch of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program in July 2025, with installations accelerating sharply through late 2025 and early 2026.

The program has been a runaway success, with more than 1,000 batteries being installed every day on average. In the second half of 2025 alone, Australians installed more home battery storage than in the preceding four years combined.

But the important shift is not just the number of batteries being installed, it's how they are beginning to reshape the grid.

Households with batteries are increasingly:
✅ Charging during the solar-rich middle of the day - helping soak up excess rooftop solar.
✅ Becoming more self-sufficient during evening peaks - reducing demand on the grid.
✅ Exporting stored solar back into the grid later in the day - reducing the need for peaking generation.

That is helping smooth wholesale prices, reduce pressure on the evening peak and create more room for rooftop solar generation.
