Out on a site this week!

The remote operations that MTGA supports don’t happen from an office. They happen in 40-degree heat, on red dirt, on sites where the nearest hardware store is 800km away. Which is exactly why we design, build and support our gear the way we do.

Mining communications used to mean UHF radios and a landline to the office.

Now it’s autonomous haulage, real-time machine health, CCTV, access control, IoT sensors and remote ops centres, all sitting on the same network. When it drops, the whole stack drops with it.
And most remote WA and QLD sites aren’t starting from ideal conditions.

No telco coverage. Heat, dust, vibration. Pits and haul roads that shift every few months. Mixed OEMs that were never designed to talk to each other.

For autonomous fleets, this gets sharper again. A black spot isn’t an inconvenience, it’s a stop zone. The network needs to follow the operational footprint of the site, not the other way around.

The MTGA Battery Wash Down Trailer is a fully electric alternative to fossil-fuelled high-pressure washing. An industrial lithium battery bank drives 3000 psi from a 1000L tank, with over two hours of continuous run time and a four-hour fast recharge.

Out on a Pilbara site this week.

Two MTGA boom gates in service. Both designed and built in our Carlisle workshop, both still supported by the same team that put them together.

This is the part that doesn’t show up in a product brochure. The drive in, the early start, the on-the-ground work that turns “installed” into “still running three years later.”

Meet Nick. Design Draftsperson at MTGA and increasingly the person on the other end of the phone when customers are working through what they need.

Nick started with us as a contract fabricator. It didn’t take long to work out his background in fabrication, design and CAD made him the right fit for a full-time design role. More recently, he’s stepped into an internal sales capacity, where his friendly, upbeat approach and genuine love of working with people are helping customers land on the right solutions.

Outside of work, Nick is into music, a good dance, and has picked up the didgeridoo (which we’re hoping makes an appearance at the next workshop barbecue).

Installing mining technology is the easy part.

The harder part is making sure that same system is still performing 12, 24 and 36 months later, after the dust, vibration, heat and operational pressure have all done their work on it.

For Tier-2 operations especially, this is where the resourcing gap shows up. The systems on site are getting more sophisticated. The internal team is already stretched. And reactive maintenance feels cheaper right up until it isn’t.

The actual cost of waiting for a system to fail:
👉 Unplanned downtime at the worst possible time
👉 Reduced productivity while it’s offline
👉 Safety and compliance exposure if monitoring or control systems are involved
👉 Higher long-term repair costs as small faults become large ones
👉 A shorter lifecycle on technology that was a significant capital outlay

A planned service visit is a known, scheduled, contained cost. A failure is an unknown one and on a remote site it’s rarely just the one system that goes down.
