Great to be at – the 2026 Victorian Transport Infrastructure Conference, kicking off day one surrounded by people who are genuinely passionate about the future of transport in our regions.
There’s something energising about being in a room hearing firsthand about the projects shaping how we move people and freight across the state. These conversations go well beyond infrastructure — they’re about improving lifestyle, unlocking regional growth, and making sure communities stay connected and competitive.
A standout so far today was Ali Cupper Gross , Mayor of Mildura Rural City Council, who spoke passionately about the need for passenger rail to return to Mildura. It’s a strong reminder of how critical transport investment is for regions like Sunraysia and the Wimmera.
Passenger rail services to Mildura were cut back and ultimately stopped in 1993, and more than 30 years later the region is still without a train connection — with no firm commitment yet from the Victorian Government to reinstate it.
It’s a gap that continues to impact accessibility, liveability, and economic opportunity across the north-west.
From a JMA Group perspective, it’s exciting to see where we can contribute to this space. Whether it’s structural steel, fabrication, or supporting the delivery of key infrastructure projects, there’s a real opportunity for regional businesses like ours to play a hands-on role in building these networks and strengthening the supply chain that keeps them moving.
Looking forward to the rest of the conference and continuing the conversations around how we can better connect regional Australia.
