Recently, the Urban Aluminium team joined colleagues from GM Poles Australia in welcoming members of the Best Practice Network to the Richlands facility for a morning of learning, discussion and industry collaboration.

The event brought together professionals from a range of industries to explore manufacturing, business improvement and the importance of sharing knowledge across organisations.

A highlight of the session was an introduction to the Entrepreneurial Operating System® (EOS) by Brett from EOS Worldwide, who provided valuable insights into how businesses can improve alignment, accountability and ex*****on through a clear and structured framework.

Attendees also had the opportunity to gain a behind-the-scenes perspective on Australian manufacturing and engage in discussions around industry best practice, continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Thank you to Craig and Laura from Best Practice Network, Brett from EOS Worldwide , and everyone who joined us for the event. We look forward to continuing to learn from industry peers and fostering opportunities to connect, collaborate and share ideas.

Ever wondered what’s new in sports and physical activity? 🌟

Last week, we joined the National Sports & Physical Activity Convention in Melbourne and it was a blast! Huge shoutout to Buckford Illumination Group and Signify for having Urban Aluminium / GM Poles Australia on their stand. We loved connecting with our industry partners and discovering amazing innovations. 🤝

Catching up with CME Group and familiar faces was a highlight too! 😊

Thanks again to Buckford and Signify. Excited to keep the conversations going!

What is anodising and why does it behave differently to other finishes?
Anodising is a controlled electrochemical process that thickens the natural oxide layer on aluminium. This layer is part of the metal, not something applied over the top.
That means it will not peel or delaminate like paint, and it performs differently over time.
In this carousel, we break down
• What anodising is
• What it is not
• What influences performance
A useful guide for anyone working with aluminium in architectural or infrastructure projects.

📍 Smarter Streetscape Infrastructure – Woodridge, QLD

As part of the Croydon Rd Streetscape upgrade in Woodridge, QLD, .council has implemented a multi-functional urban infrastructure solution supporting both lighting and security outcomes, delivered via .
The 5m poles integrate LED lighting and CCTV within a single asset, improving visibility, safety, and overall efficiency across the corridor while maintaining a clean and consistent streetscape.

Manufactured from marine-grade aluminium with a durable powder-coated finish, the poles are designed for long-term performance in Queensland conditions with minimal maintenance.

A practical example of how infrastructure is evolving 👉 combining multiple functions into more efficient, future-ready public assets.

FACT: Urban infrastructure rarely stays static.

Lighting and pole assets often evolve after installation.
New technology, increased loads, and future attachments can all introduce new demands on structural performance.
That’s why designing for today isn’t always enough.
Planning for future adaptation helps reduce retrofit risk, protects asset integrity, and supports smoother upgrades over time.

💡A simple question to ask early:
What might need to be added to this pole in 5, 10, or 20 years?
If you’re delivering streetscape or public realm projects, building in that flexibility from day one can make a real difference.

❓Here's a question for you...
When should material selection be finalised to best manage long-term performance, maintenance and risk?

🔘 Concept design
🔘 Detailed design
🔘 Procurement

❓In practice, do projects always achieve this, or are there factors that push the decision later?

💬 Let us know your thoughts / experience with material selection on projects in the comments below.

🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️ Supporting safer shared pathways in Petrie
Delivered for the Redcliffe Peninsula Rail Line Pathway in Petrie, QLD, this project provides reliable lighting for pedestrians and cyclists while allowing flexibility for future technology integrations such as CCTV, sensors and signage.

Designed using marine‑grade aluminium with a durable powder‑coated finish, the poles are built for long‑term performance in Queensland conditions.

A practical example of how public infrastructure can support safety today while remaining adaptable over time.

When selecting materials for infrastructure, environment matters.
Projects may be exposed to:
🏭 Urban pollution
🌊 Salt‑spray and coastal conditions
🍃 Wind regions and structural demands
🛠 Long‑term maintenance and lifecycle considerations

Aluminium performs differently depending on where it’s installed, which is why environment‑led selection supports more durable, lower‑maintenance outcomes.
If you’re planning infrastructure for urban, coastal or public‑realm environments, material choice should reflect the conditions an asset will operate in.
