𝗦𝗜𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲

Thank you for participating in the recent community survey to inform Pembroke’s Social Impact Assessment (SIA). The consultation process for this SIA employed two key methods: qualitative, semi-structured interviews and a survey which combined quantitative and qualitative questions. We conducted interviews with 36 stakeholders representing different sectors and communities. Additionally, we were pleased to receive 116 responses to our survey which supplemented the findings of the survey.

Through this process, we sought to understand the benefits and challenges of living and working in the Isaac Region community. As part of a community underpinned by the resource’s industry we sought to understand people’s outlook on the future, and their views and expectations of Pembroke.

Many respondents highlighted the cumulative impacts of concentrated mining activity in the region, leading to the following key themes:

𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆
Almost all respondents spoke about how their towns were great places to have a family with many also describing the friendly, connected and helpful nature of the communities in the region.

Many respondents also commented about the various positive aspects of the mining industry, particularly in providing opportunities for employment, training and local business participation as well as contributing to community vibrancy and sustainability.

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀
However, respondents also identified key challenges including a lack of affordable housing, namely rental affordability; difficulty accessing services such as childcare and health services, and limited youth engagement opportunities. Impacts on traffic and road quality were also noted, along with competition for scarce labour.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲
Many respondents describe an ideal future involving vibrant communities, with families residing in town, people volunteering and more shopping opportunities and social infrastructure.

Respondents did highlight uncertainty about the impacts of a future mining downturn; more automation impacting jobs; and an increasing trend toward non-residential workforces.

𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
Many community members are looking to mining companies to provide solutions to many of their challenges, particularly around housing affordability with Governments positioned as key to delivering roads, social infrastructure and services. This data is critically important and valuable in shaping Pembroke’s social investment and partnership commitments within the region.

As part of the survey process, we asked respondents to nominate local organisations for us to support. We received an overwhelming number of nominations, so we’ve collated the donation amounts and selected, via secret ballot, three organisations and made a $400 to each of those listed below.

- Moranbah Miners Junior Football Club
- Moranbah State High School
- Oasis Youth Moranbah

This weekend Pembroke partnered with Moranbah Arts to bring something new to Moranbah - a stand up comedy workshop with professional comedian Fiona McGarry. With over 20 years of experience Fiona provided excellent insights and coaching for attendees. We look forward to hearing the new material from talented comedians in Moranbah at the showcase on 3 December.

Pembroke was delighted to kick off the festive season at the Annual Nebo Community Christmas Fair last week!

As proud sponsors of this much-loved event, our Pembroke team attended on the night and had the pleasure of hosting a Christmas lucky dip, complete with plenty of fun prizes for families to enjoy.

It was a fantastic evening filled with community spirit and festive cheer. Our team thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many community members and seeing such strong support for the event. A huge thank you to Nebo Community Sports and Recreation Club Inc. for organising yet another wonderful Christmas Fair. Valkyrie Mini Miners Graduate!

Pembroke was thrilled to welcome students and teachers from Valkyrie State School to Olive Downs earlier this week as they completed our Mini Miners Program. Students experienced an in depth tour of modern mining in practice, including insights into environmental stewardship and conservation.

We’re proud to contribute to our local communities, and the Mini Miners Program is a great example of Pembroke’s commitment to supporting schools in the region. The initiative provides students with the opportunity to explore the wide range of career paths available at Olive Downs, with members of our workforce proudly showcasing their roles and their passion for the resources industry.

Educational excursions like this highlight our ongoing commitment to supporting the wider community surrounding Olive Downs, a key priority for Pembroke. A special thanks to our on site partners Thiess and Sedgman for their continued support of community initiatives at Olive Downs.

What a way to wrap up the term! Last week, our incredible Dirk Flanders went above and beyond by helping Moranbah East State Schooll transport their Year 1 students to their Water Safety Lessons.
