SYNAPSE SOCIAL

Ever wished you could turn up one conversation in a noisy room using only your brain?

Join us for the next Synapse Social, where we'll be discussing a Neuroscience paper on real-time brain-controlled selective hearing, a neurotechnology system that decodes which speaker a person is paying attention to and dynamically amplifies that voice in real time.

📖 Paper:
Real-time brain-controlled selective hearing enhances speech perception in multi-talker environments:

Underground Brain Project - Lab Tour

What if the underground networks of fungi aren't so different from the human brain?

UQ Neurotech invites you to an exclusive lab tour of the Underground Brain Project at the UQ a pioneering research initiative investigating how mycelium networks communicate through electromagnetic signals, using artificial intelligence to decode the "language" of different mushroom varieties.

The tour will be led by Professor Janet Wiles, Professor of Human Centred Computing at in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UQ. With 30 years of experience in AI, neuroscience, and complex systems, Professor Wiles leads a multidisciplinary team bridging art, science, and engineering to better understand the living world beneath our feet.

Whether you're into neuroscience, biotech, AI, or just curious this is a great opportunity to me researchers at UQ and even learn about how you might be able to get involved.

Date: Thursday, 30th April
Time: 6:00 PM

What would happen if you could stimulate your own brain at the push of a button?

Join UQ Neurotech for the first Synapse Social of 2026 exploring one of neuroscience’s most thought-provoking experiments. In the 1960s, researchers discovered that humans given the ability to electrically stimulate certain areas of their brains would repeatedly press a lever, up to a thousand times in an hour.

At this event we will read through this early paper, "Electrical Self-Stimulation of the Brain in Man" by R.G Heath and unpack what these early experiments revealed about the brain’s reward system, motivation, and behaviour.

Come along for a relaxed social discussion. Whether you’re a neuroscience student, tech enthusiast, or just intrigued by how the brain works, this is a great chance to learn something new and meet others interested in neurotechnology.
