Capricornia Pumped Hydro

Capricornia Pumped Hydro We appreciate community feedback and are committed to addressing concerns about our project.

While this page is not monitored 24/7, we encourage you to reach out to us directly via phone or email for an immediate response. Capricornia Pumped Hydro is a proposed energy storage project near a few kilometres downstream of the existing Eungella Dam and is 80km west of Mackay. Capricornia will deliver enough power to meet about 4% of Queensland's total energy demand. The project will generate

750MW, with a storage capacity of 12GWh, or around 16 hours – using the power of water to store and generate clean electricity when it is most needed. Our investment and local partnerships will deliver lasting community benefit and regional economic growth and opportunity.

Last week, we visited the Pioneer Valley Rail Trail to see the progress of drainage improvement works supported through our Community Benefit Grant Program.

The $21,300 grant has funded drainage works along the section of the trail between Gargett Gap and the Gargett Dump Road intersection, helping to improve the trail surface and make it more accessible for the community.

It was also great to hear from Rail Trail President Mike Browne about the long-term vision for the trail and the role it can play in connecting towns throughout the Pioneer Valley and beyond. That vision of stronger connections, active lifestyles and thriving local communities is what makes projects like this so worthwhile.

We’re proud to support a much-loved community asset that encourages people to get outdoors, explore the region and enjoy everything the Pioneer Valley has to offer.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us at our community information sessions in Collinsville, Nebo and Eungella last week.

It was great to connect with local residents ahead of the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) public display period and answer questions about the project, the assessment process and how people can participate in the formal submission process run by the Office of the Coordinator-General.

A special thank you to Greater Whitsunday Communities for their support in helping organise the sessions, and to Councillor Alison Jones for attending the Eungella session and joining the conversation with local residents.

We know EIS documents are long, technical and not something most people come across every day. That's why these sessions were focused on helping people understand what to expect, where to find information and how to make their voices heard when the draft EIS goes on public display later this year.

While the timing for the draft EIS public display period is not yet determined, it’s an important step in the assessment process. We’ll make sure the community is kept informed as details are confirmed, and we’ll be back out in the region again before it is released to provide further updates and answer questions.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend, ask questions and share their perspectives. Community feedback plays an important role in the assessment process, and we're committed to making information about the project as accessible and easy to understand as possible.

Big thanks to our hosts:

We're supporting stronger, more resilient communities 💪

“Reliable communication can make all the difference during a critical response. Starlink will help us respond faster and more effectively during emergencies, especially in hard-to-reach areas” - State Emergency Service - Mackay Regional Unit

We are proud to provide the Mackay Regional SES Unit Support Group with $1,500 from the pre-construction Community Benefit Fund to purchase a Starlink kit.

This gear will enhance communication during emergencies, especially in remote areas where it’s needed most.

Huge thanks to Alex and Jan for giving us a tour of the Mackay SES facility and congratulations on 50 years of the Queensland State Emergency Service.

We were thrilled to support the Eungella Craft Group with a $2,200 contribution from our Community Benefits Fund, helping deliver a series of creative workshops open to everyone in the community. Participants learnt natural dyeing, felting and earring-making techniques.

The group has been active for 36 years and brings together around 40 members from Eungella, Crediton, Netherdale and Finch Hatton. Along with providing a space to learn new skills, the group also provides community connection and helps reduce social isolation.

“These workshops are about more than just craft, they’re an opportunity to connect, learn something new, and share skills” - Eungella Craft Group representative.
