Did you know there’s a piece of quarrying history hidden at Coldstream Quarry?

Tucked behind the pit is a 100-year-old explosives magazine, once used to store dynamite and black powder safely.

Every detail of the structure reflects the safety thinking of the time, from thick stone walls for containment to a lightweight roof designed to direct any blast upward. Even the interior was built without metal to reduce the risk of sparks.

Today, it stands as a reminder of how quarrying practices have evolved, and how a commitment to safety has always been part of the industry.

Last month our WA teams delivered Boral’s largest continuous concrete pour in the state in more than a decade — supplying 2,200m3 of concrete to the new Women and Babies Hospital in Western Australia.

It took five batching plants, 60 drivers, and months of meticulous planning to get it right. The result? A seamless operation that quite literally lays the foundation for generations of care.

Ever wondered what happens behind the gates of a cement works?

At Berrima Cement Works in NSW, the gates were recently opened to the New Berrima community for a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of the state’s key cement operations.

From guided tours through the production process to equipment displays and activities for families, the day brought together neighbours, staff and local organisations to connect with the site in a new way.

Tours were in high demand, with visitors keen to understand how cement is made and learn more about how the site is evolving, including the increasing use of alternative fuels in manufacturing.

Supplying a significant proportion of cement across NSW and the ACT, Berrima plays a vital role in supporting construction across the region. The open day was an opportunity to share that story directly with the community and showcase the people behind it.

After years working in healthcare, Wendy made a change, stepping into a completely new industry as a plant operator at Boral’s Wellcamp Quarry. Since then, she’s built her skills across multiple roles and found confidence in a hands-on, team-focused environment.

“Explore every opportunity and stay open to change,” Wendy says. “Remaining adaptable creates the best pathways both professionally and personally.”
