Walk, Talk and Stainless: Brisbane River Edition

A great afternoon with our ASSDA Young Professionals exploring stainless steel in action along the Brisbane River.

From the Riverwalk through to Kangaroo Point and back to Felons Brewing Co, the tour highlighted how stainless steel is specified, fabricated, and performs across real-world infrastructure.

Plenty of good conversations, shared insights, and time spent seeing the material we work with every day in context.

Special thanks to Matt Brown (Southern Stainless) and Richard Matheson (ASSDA) for leading the tour and sharing their industry insights.

Thanks to everyone who joined us - more Walk, Talk and Stainless events to come.

🏆 Proud moment for Australian stainless steel.

ASSDA is honoured to receive the Gold Award in the Market Development category at the 2026 Stainless Steel Industry Awards, hosted by World Stainless in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This recognition was awarded in collaboration with ASSDA Member Ronstan Tensile Architecture for the Narre Warren Station project on Melbourne’s Pakenham Line, an outstanding example of innovation, sustainability, and engineering excellence in stainless steel.

The project replaced a conventional 30-tonne carbon steel structural solution with just 3 tonnes of stainless steel cable, fittings and components, delivering significant material savings, reduced embodied carbon, and long-term durability benefits.
Congratulations to all involved in delivering this project. We are proud to support and promote Australian stainless steel capability on the global stage.

This marks ASSDA’s fourth accolade at the World Stainless Steel Industry Awards and reinforces the strength of collaboration across Australia’s stainless steel industry.

🏆 Crafting excellence in at industrial scale.

The $222 million Project Horizon expansion at Snackbrands Australia’s Orchard Hills facility has delivered a 22,225m² advanced manufacturing and distribution hub producing some of Australia’s most recognisable potato chip snack brands. Stainless steel sits at the heart of the operation, enabling hygienic, high-performance and durable food production at scale.

Delivered by ASSDA Member and Accredited Fabricator Pipe-Weld, the project showcases how disciplined stainless steel selection and ex*****on underpins modern food manufacturing environments, from process-critical pipework and CIP systems through to structural platforms, gantries, and services infrastructure.

Across the facility, stainless steel grades were strategically selected to suit service conditions, from 304 for structural platforms, to 316 and 316L for hygienic process systems, and 2205 duplex for high-chloride applications. The result is a system designed for cleanability, corrosion resistance and long-term operational resilience in a demanding washdown environment.

Fabrication excellence was equally critical. Orbital welding, tightly controlled purging, rigorous QA documentation, and compliance with Australian structural and pressure standards ensured consistent weld integrity across thousands of joints. Post-fabrication treatments including pickling and passivation restored and strengthened corrosion resistance for long-term performance under intensive CIP regimes.

This project also demonstrated innovation in hygienic design and construction methodology, including fully sealed service conduits, self-draining pipework layouts, and the use of an electric spider crane to enable precise installation within live production environments.

In recognition of this outstanding delivery, Pipe-Weld was awarded the 2025 ASSDA Fabricator Project of the Year Award in the Food, Beverage and Pharmaceutical category, a well-earned acknowledgement of technical excellence and ex*****on at scale.

âś… How Stainless Steel has Revolutionised the Water Industry
📅 25 May 2026, 12.00pm AEST | 🎙️ Presented by Dr David Nicholas

Over the past 50 years, stainless steel has become the material of choice in water and wastewater infrastructure—replacing traditional materials and enabling critical systems like desalination.

In this webinar, we explored how stainless steel is used across the industry, from treatment plants to reticulation and plumbing, with a focus on practical considerations such as material selection, water chemistry, commissioning, and corrosion management.

A valuable session highlighting how stainless steel continues to drive performance, reliability, and longevity in water infrastructure.

As Australia’s digital infrastructure accelerates, so too does the demand for materials that can deliver performance, reliability and longevity at scale.

A great example is the role stainless steel is playing in the rapidly expanding data centre sector, where even the smallest components can have a big impact.

ASSDA Member and Accredited Fabricator recently delivered precision-engineered stainless steel expansion joints for a major hyperscale data centre in Melbourne. Designed for high-purity cooling systems, these components are critical to maintaining efficiency and operational reliability.

By replacing traditional pipe loops with compact grade 316 stainless steel bellows, Aflex achieved:
✔️ Reduced pumping energy
✔️ Improved cooling efficiency
✔️ Space savings and simplified installation

In environments where water purity exceeds drinking standards and system performance is non-negotiable, stainless steel stands out for its:
• Corrosion resistance
• Strength and flexibility under thermal stress
• Long service life with minimal maintenance
• Sustainability through 100% recyclability

With billions being invested into AI and cloud infrastructure, data centres are fast becoming one of Australia’s most significant growth markets, and stainless steel is right at the heart of it.

In recognition of its excellence in design, engineering and fabrication, Aflex was awarded the 2025 Australian Industry Stainless Steel Fabricator Project of the Year (Small Project, Big Impact).

This award-winning project is a strong example of how local capability, innovation and the smart application of stainless steel are enabling the next generation of high-performance infrastructure.
