From 1 December 2026, Australia’s workplace exposure rules change — and welding fume is on the list.

If your extraction was set up years ago, it’s worth a look. A few things that catch workshops out: general ventilation isn’t the same as capturing fume at the source, and a unit rated for mild steel fume isn’t automatically certified for stainless.

QWS is now an authorised Kemper distributor, so we can cover everything from a mobile unit that rolls to the job through to continuous-duty wall systems and air quality monitoring — plus Weldmax FumeVault, Lincoln and on-torch extraction.

Fortis Welding Demo Day – that's a wrap

Thanks to everyone who came down to Brendale yesterday for our exclusive Fortis Welding Demo Day with Fronius and SMENCO.

It was a great chance to see the full Fortis range set up and running side by side – from the 270 through to the 500 – along with Kemper fume extraction integrated right at the welding station.

There's only so much you can learn from a spec sheet. This afternoon is about getting under the hood and seeing how the Fortis performs on real work.

Last in our Fortis series: the top of the range Fortis 500.

This is the top of the range — full 500 A output for the applications where arc consistency can't drop off, no matter how long the shift runs.

What you get:

1. Full 500 A output – compact or split configuration, so you can keep it as an all-in-one or separate the power source from the wirefeeder for an extended operating radius on bigger jobs.
2. Water cooling retrofittable at any time – start gas-cooled if that's all the job needs today, add water cooling later without replacing the machine.
3. Built for high-deposition work – the headroom to run larger wire diameters and longer arc-on times than the rest of the range, without the arc losing stability late in the shift.
4. Up to 240 optimised welding characteristics for steel, stainless and aluminium, with pulse, SynchroPulse, stitch, TAC tacking, HotStart and anti-stick carrying over from the rest of the Fortis line.
