The Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) is a highly successful industry-led education initiative. Over the past two decades the QMEA, as the education arm of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC), has played a pivotal role in inspiring and preparing over 65,000 Queensland students to pursue c

areers in the resources and energy sectors. The QMEA provides hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and trade workshops with the support of industry partners. These learning opportunities open students to the possibility of potential careers in the resources industry through university study and apprenticeship pathways into the resources industry. The QMEA's Minerals and Energy Gateway to Industry Schools project and Regional Hubs program are proudly supported and funded by the Queensland Government.

Science + Industry = Discovery 🧪✨

Year 10 students from Kirwan State High School rolled up their sleeves for a recent STEM Unearthed workshop packed with experiments linked to chemical engineering, copper extraction and how these processes are used in the resources industry.

Wal from Glencore Queensland Metals joined the workshop, sharing valuable industry insights and giving the experiments a real-world context. Our QMEA Student Ambassador at Kirwan SHS, Rhianna, was also there to give the students a hand.

As one student reflected at the end of the workshop: "Today I learnt there are a lot more careers in mining than just driving trucks."

📺Great to see our Girls in Resources Leadership Skills mentoring program in the news this week!

Now in its 8th year, we are seeing the impact of this program with the majority of graduates going on to follow trade or professional careers in the resources industry.

We are sure this experience has given the students unique insights into the industry and the confidence to pursue their resources career dreams in 2027!

🙋Where would you rather be - in a science lab doing a STEM experiment or in the workshop doing a trade project❓

Students at Capella State High School didn't need to make the choice, with a combined STEM/Trade workshop giving them the best of both worlds. The students did half-day workshops with trade experts and professionals from Glencore Coal Australia on hand to assist them complete a full rotation of activities related back to processes used in the coal mining industry.

It doesn't matter if you prefer a 🔨hammer or a 🔬microscope - with QMEA workshops we've got you covered!

"My industry mentor has been amazing, she is a role model who has inspired me and given me the confidence I need before going into university and entering the workforce" - Giselle, Moura SHS.

Year 12 students from across Queensland gathered in Brisbane this week for the finale of the Girls in Resources Leadership Skills mentoring program. The students had the opportunity to meet with their industry mentors and reflect on the many benefits of the successful program targeting young women keen to have professional and trade careers in resources.

It isn't just the students learning from the QMEA - teachers do too! 👨‍🏫👩‍🏫

Five teachers from Millmerran State School had a fabulous professional development opportunity recently – touring the local Millmerran Power Plant, kindly facilitated by the team Genuity's Millmerran Power.

Heath Commens guided the teachers, providing valuable insights into the plant’s operations. The tour included an overview of the coal-fired power generation process, visits to key areas of the facility, and an inside look at the control room, where teachers learned how the plant connects to the National Electricity Market.

The teachers also chatted with site employees about career pathways into the power industry, giving them valuable information to share with students keen on exploring future careers in the sector.

The tour gave the educators a better understanding of the power industry and is sure to help them bring real-world science from the local community back into their classrooms.

More than 60 students from Years 3 - 6 at Miles State School put their STEM skills into action at a Mining Big Ideas workshop today, delivered in partnership with Arrow Energy.

Students explored how robotic and drone technology is used in gas field operations through hands-on challenges - programming robots to complete simulated gas field inspections and learning how autonomous technologies support safety and maintenance across the resources sector.

Students also had fun investigating the science of flight (and drones!) through a paper plane challenge, developing their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills along the way.
A highlight was hearing from geologist Ailsa McDonald, who shared her career story and the important role geology plays in finding and managing the energy resources we rely on every day.

From coding robots to exploring future STEM careers, it was a fantastic day of discovery, teamwork and innovation. 🕵️🚀🤖

Got to love a full-circle moment! ⭕

Origin Energy team members and former local students Casey Wraight and Peter Stein returned to St John's School Roma and Roma State College this week to help deliver QMEA’s STEM Unearthed workshops.

They shared their career stories and helped students to complete hands-on STEM activities related to the gas industry including core drilling analysis, chemical engineering and pipeline pressures.

it was a great way to connect the schools with industry and bring STEM learning and careers to life. 👏

Trades, teamwork and hands-on learning in action

Year 10 students from Thuringowa State High School recently took part in the QMEA Tradies for a Day program, exploring apprenticeship pathways and trade careers in Queensland's resources sector.

From virtual welding and mechanical tasks to electrical circuits and aptitude testing, students learnt about some of the skills and attributes employers look for in future apprentices.

Making a splash with water science!💧

Years 7 and 8 students at Spinifex State College (Junior Campus) rolled up their sleeves and became water quality experts during QMEA’s Water: Yours, Ours & Mine workshop, proudly sponsored by Glencore Mount Isa Mines.

Through water testing and problem-solving activities, students investigated how filtration methods can improve water quality - an important part of water management in the resources industry.

It was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm, critical thinking and problem-solving as students explored the vital role water plays in our everyday lives and industries.
