Sometimes the water is the problem, not the traffic.

At a truck wash bay in Brisbane's north, washwater was escaping onto the surrounding driveways.

We installed speed humps across the entry and exit to create a low water bund, using longer sections, tight-fitting ends and silicone seals underneath and between each section.

The result is a practical way to help direct washwater towards the intended drainage area.

Still doing their job?

About 10 years ago we put these speed humps into a retirement village on the Redcliffe Peninsula. This week they came out.

Rubber that sits in the Queensland sun wears down a little at a time, so we took the old humps out, sealed every hole, and put four new 2.7 metre round-top rubber humps back in the same two spots, with the drainage gap kept in the middle.

🏘️ Wide Roads Don't Always Mean Safer Roads

Modern residential developments often feature attractive, wide driveways and convenient access roads.

But there's a downside.

Wide, open roads can encourage drivers to travel faster than they should, particularly around corners and shared pedestrian areas.

At a Hope Island residential development, managing vehicle speeds was an important consideration.

The objective wasn't to cover the entire complex in speed humps.

It was to identify where vehicles could build speed and introduce practical traffic calming in the locations that needed it.

🛒 A Painted Line Won't Physically Slow a Car

Think about your local shopping centre car park.

They did their job. But rubber that sits in the Queensland sun for 10 years wears down, and a speed hump doesn't fail all at once. It just gets a little lower each year, and drivers stop slowing down for it.

The body corporate chair and I walked the site and agreed it was time.

Same spots, same job. The old humps came out, every old hole was sealed, and new 2.7 metre round-top rubber humps went back in, two side by side at each spot with the drainage gap kept in the middle. Round-top is our smoothest, quietest profile, which matters in a village where residents cross them every day.

💧 Not Every Speed Hump Is Installed to Slow Traffic

At Cleanaway's Northgate truck wash facility, the challenge wasn't speeding vehicles.

It was controlling wastewater escaping from the wash bay.
