Powerlink joined the Australian Defence Force in a multi-agency exercise designed to strengthen the protection of Australia's critical infrastructure.

Exercise Austral Shield 26 was conducted in Queensland last month at substations near Gladstone and Cairns.

The exercise allowed us to work closely with Defence, government agencies and industry partners to test our procedures for a range of potential cyber and physical security scenarios.

The Powerlink team recently attended St Patrick's College Shorncliffe's Careers Expo, speaking with nearly 500 students from Years 9-12 and their parents about career pathways into the energy industry, including our apprenticeship program and the opportunities available through our vacation and graduate programs.

Students also had the chance to get hands-on with some of our new training equipment, completing a practical circuit under the guidance of our field leaders and learning more about how we train the next generation of apprentices.

Thanks to St Patrick's College for the opportunity to connect with students and support conversations about future career pathways.

Applications for our Brisbane Apprenticeships close 16 August, learn more at https://bit.ly/4bU6zNO

9 students from 9 different Brisbane high schools joined the Powerlink team for a week of work experience, exploring some of the many career pathways possible in Queensland’s energy industry.

The students gained insights into a range of areas including design engineering, commissioning, project delivery, energy system planning and our oil laboratory.

They also took part in hands-on learning activities including building transmission towers with spaghetti and marshmallows, using a water-based simulation to explore how supply and demand is balanced, and a substation tour to explore primary and secondary systems up close.

We were impressed with the students' curiosity, enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the people, skills and technologies that support the delivery of a safe, affordable, reliable and sustainable network for our customers.

Powerlink Queensland, in partnership with Energy Queensland, through their Energex and Ergon Energy Network, renewed our commitment to the Energising Queensland SES Equipment Program for 2026-27.

Established in 2015, this partnership continues to strengthen the state’s disaster resilience by equipping SES groups with tools and training equipment to support their response capabilities.

This partnership will provide vital equipment, including generators, portable power stations, lighting, power tools, vehicle accessories, first aid training resources, stretchers, and water rescue and height safety training equipment.

We are proud to support the volunteers who step forward when their communities need them most, helping ensure they have the equipment and resources to make a difference when it matters most.

Work has commenced on a transformational power project for Central Queensland with the first major contract awarded injecting $50 million into local businesses.

Powerlink’s Calvale to Calliope River Transmission Reinforcement Project is the first stage of a critical program of transmission upgrades to ensure the safety, reliability and security of supply in Central Queensland.

Ahead of construction commencing in August, BMD will undertake site preparation and access works, with a strong focus on local participation, including opportunities for regional businesses, suppliers and workers.

Powerlink has also partnered with State Development to deliver capability-building workshops, helping local businesses prepare for opportunities associated with major infrastructure projects.

We'll be out in the community this month to provide information about the project and upcoming opportunities across the region.

Understanding how our customers are changing behaviours and adopting new technology is critical to providing safe, cost-effective and reliable electricity networks into the future.

The Queensland Household Energy Survey results build on the wealth of data we use to plan network investment. The decisions our customers make on the home front inform our decisions about the electricity transmission and distribution network infrastructure that supports them.

You can explore the results from the 2026 Queensland Household Energy Survey at qhes.com.au

The Powerlink team has been recognised internationally, receiving the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)'s Energy Delivery and Customer Solutions Technology Transfer Award, which celebrates applying research to solve real-world challenges in the electricity sector.

Through the dynamic line ratings project, the team used weather sensors and real-time temperature data to safely unlock additional capacity on our transmission network.

This recognition reflects the value of combining research, engineering and data expertise to deliver practical outcomes for our network and recognises the innovation being delivered in Queensland, on a global stage.

Thank you to everyone across the business who contributed to this work and helped bring the project to life.
