GRP Traditional Village Portacabin – Design & Prototype

This project showcases the design, engineering, and fabrication of a GRP portacabin developed as a full-scale prototype to replicate traditional Qatari village architecture using advanced composite construction methods.

The structure is manufactured entirely from Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) panels, finished with a hand-crafted textured surface that authentically imitates traditional lime plaster and mud-rendered masonry commonly found in historic Qatari buildings. The external walls incorporate architectural relief detailing, including recessed arches and framed wall panels, faithfully reflecting regional heritage design elements.

Prominent projecting timber beams (danchal) are integrated into the upper façade, a distinctive feature of traditional Gulf architecture, recreated using GRP timber-effect components for durability and consistency. The doors and window frames are finished in wood-grain effect, complemented by traditional-style hardware, reinforcing the historical character while maintaining modern performance standards.

The modular construction allows the portacabin to be transportable, quickly assembled, and scalable, making it ideal for cultural villages, heritage exhibitions, museums, film sets, festivals, and tourism developments. Unlike conventional masonry, the GRP system offers excellent resistance to heat, humidity, corrosion, and weathering, significantly reducing maintenance requirements in harsh Gulf environments.

This prototype demonstrates a successful fusion of cultural authenticity and modern composite technology, highlighting expertise in GRP mould design, surface finishing, architectural detailing, and heritage interpretation. The system provides a cost-effective, lightweight, and long-lasting alternative to traditional construction while preserving the visual identity of Qatar’s architectural heritage

This project involved the complete build-up design, engineering, and production of advanced composite architectural structures. I led the composite design methodology, manufacturing processes, and on-site coordination from concept through installation.

Falconry is a deeply rooted cultural tradition in Qatar, and the Giant Hood at Katara Cultural Village is one of the country’s most iconic architectural tributes to this heritage. Designed to resemble a traditional falcon hood, the structure features immersive, interactive multimedia exhibits that allow visitors to explore the history and cultural significance of Qatari falconry.
I was responsible for the full design and production of the structure, which was entirely manufactured using advanced composite materials. This project reflects both the artistic symbolism of Qatari culture and the innovative possibilities of composite engineering
