The Hidden Cost of Shade on Solar Panels

Even a small amount of shade can have a significant impact on the performance of a solar power system.

Solar panels generate electricity by converting sunlight into electrical energy. When trees, buildings, antennas or other objects cast shadows across the panels, less sunlight reaches the photovoltaic (PV) cells, reducing the amount of electricity they can produce.

Because solar cells are connected together in strings, shading on just a few panels can reduce the output of the entire string—not just the shaded panels. This means a relatively small shadow can result in a disproportionately large loss of power generation.
