I’m on a podcast! Words I truly never thought I would say.

A massive thank you to Sarah Han de Beaux and the team Citizen Science Show for giving me the platform to share my story, and nerd out on a few of my absolute favourite algae facts.

Our conversation was a timely reminder of how citizen science empowers individuals to reclaim sovereignty over our natural world. My ultimate goal is to bridge the widening gap between people and nature, and sharing a space with such like-minded people was an absolute joy.

Each of these spheres is a colony made from thousands of individual algae cells. The outer cells are connected by an invisible web and beat their flagella in unison, allowing the whole colony to roll through the water towards the light.

Inside are daughter cells, the next generation forming within the parent sphere before eventually being released.

Volvox is considered a model organisms by scientists for understanding the evolution of multicellular life. It made the transition from single cells to coordinated colonies 200 million years ago and still today offers a quiet reminder of the power of coming together.
