SHOP JOURNAL

Small business = multi skilling

All print shops know this feeling, you're a small business and there are a million tasks to do. You need to be multi-skilled and knowledgable in all areas of the business.

We're fortunate to have a production team that are multi-skilled and can float between production areas to help keep the flow of work moving.

In addition to this, our office crew can move and adjust accordingly. From graphic design / artwork processing, customer service, technical ink/print solutions and much more behind the scenes.

Having such a broad range of skillsets under one roof allows us to have staff away or on leave and we're still moving.

Thin thread mesh has been making waves ever since it was release - and for good reason.

It provides the best benefits of low/coarse mesh counts + high/fine mesh counts. Seems contradicting doesn't it?

Imagine being able to print high detail with fantastic ink deposit...what a dream.

Saati's Hi-Dro mesh is the best performing thin thread mesh we've found on the market and has become our go-to thin thread mesh.

Next time your screens need remeshing, enquire about Saati Hi-Dro Mesh. You won't regret it.

This one will bring a tear to your eye, guaranteed.

Mesh Room

Our mesh room is as busy as ever. With remeshing jobs coming in from small to large volumes. Often we may have lulls where the screen remeshing area is on the quiet side, but this year we have yet to experience this. Just when we think a quiet period is coming, a high volume remeshing job walks in.

Ink Room

When we're not mixing custom inks for customers, we're experimenting with inks to see how far we can push them. From sFX to playing with additives to achieve unique outcomes. This allows us to stay ahead and the ability to provide unique solutions for unique problems.

Dark Room / Wash Room

Busy, as always. Unique screen exposure jobs have been floating through for bottle and label printers. This has challenged us to find a dialled in process to achieve the same high quality result with a fast turn around. Often speed and quality contradict one another, however, we are finding areas to improve that allow us to turn jobs around faster and faster.

Its been a big week, with even bigger weeks coming as we approach the busiest period in the industry - the end of the year.

When we look at purchasing tools, the first thing that comes to mind is "does this help us achieve consistency?"

Because consistency doesn’t happen by accident.

A lot of what we do comes down to removing as much guesswork from the process as possible.

Three tools that help us do that every day:

⚙️ Automatic Screen Coater
Whether we’re coating 1 screen or 100, the process stays repeatable.

🎯 Colour Spectrophotometer
Because when colour accuracy matters, “looks pretty close” isn’t good enough.

🎨 Pantone Connect
Helps us take digital colours like HEX values and find the closest Pantone reference to start the matching process.

None of these tools replace experience.

They give experience better information to work with.

And when you're producing screens and custom colours for customers day after day, removing variables is what makes the result easier to repeat.

Better systems. Less guesswork. More consistency.

STOP USING LOW-BLEED WHITE ON EVERYTHING.

100% cotton is not polyester.

Polyester can contain heat-mobile disperse dyes that migrate into your ink film. Low-bleed white was designed to help manage that problem.

On 100% cotton, that same problem generally isn’t there.

A proper cotton white can focus on what cotton actually needs:

⚪ strong opacity
🧵 fibre matte-down
☁️ softer hand
🖨️ clean printability
⚡ predictable flashing

Does that mean low-bleed white can never go on cotton?

No.

Some universal whites are specifically engineered for cotton, blends and polyester.

But not every low-bleed white is universal—and certain combinations of garment dye, retained moisture and heat can create ghosting or post-bleaching on susceptible cotton garments.

So “we use the same white on everything” is not a technical decision.

It’s a habit.

Read the TDS. Check the fibre content. Test the garment.

Cotton white for cotton.

Low bleed when bleed is a real risk.

Barrier products when the garment genuinely needs blocking.

Choose white by substrate. Not by habit.

Adam didn’t build Tee It Up Screenprinting from a perfect plan.

He built it from music.

A now-defunct record label.
A borrowed $2k from his band.
An asbestos-ridden rental shed.
Heat-gunning between prints.
And a whole lot of figuring it out the hard way.

Fast forward 8 and a half years — Tee It Up now has its own warehouse in Coburg North, an automatic press, multiple heat presses, a small team, and clients across bands, labels, venues, and businesses all over Australia.

The biggest takeaway?

A print shop needs more than equipment.

It needs soul.
