Many of you would know our site supervisor Cathal Honan. Unfortunately he & his family are going through an incredibly difficult time after the sudden passing of his sister, Mairéad Delaney. She leaves behind her beautiful children, who now need all the love and support they can get.

We’ve set up a GoFundMe to help support the kids and ease some of the burden on the family during this heartbreaking time. Any contribution, big or small, would mean the world — and if you’re not able to donate, sharing this post would help more than you know.

The New Melton Railway Station is taking shape at NWPA's latest Level Crossing Removal Project! Since November 2025, Astern Group have been diligently and safely crafting the main station platforms and associated works that will reconnect travellers to the regional Ballarat V/Line.

Astern Group are on track to complete below scope for the new Melton Station:

- Forming, Reinforcing & Pouring 1000 meters of station platform retaining L-Walls
- Forming & Pouring 600 meters of rail bridge U-Trough Stitches with use of steel fiber reinforced concrete
- Lifting, landing and grouting 99nos Precast U-Foundations & 195nos Precast Slabs that will form to new platforms in new station
- Forming, Reinforcing & Pouring 110m3 of approach slabs and ballast walls
- Installing of bondek, Reinforcing & Pouring suspended station slabs on structural steel
- 1000 m3 of flowable fill as part of the new centre platform construction

At this rate, it won't be too long before Exford Rd and Coburns Rd are rail crossing-free!

Proud to share that Astern Group has successfully delivered the first milestone of our FRP package for Suburban Connect on the Suburban Rail Loop East project.

The team completed the construction of the underpinning beam tying two barrettes — a challenging scope involving intricate formwork design and complex reinforcement installation within a tight trench box environment.

A solid start to a major package. Onwards and upwards. 👷‍♂️🚧

🚧 Astern Group at Diggers Rest Level Crossing Removal 🚧

Proud to have supported Western Program Alliance in delivering the Old Calder Highway Bridge and Watsons Road Bridge works. With around 8,000 vehicles using these crossings daily and boom gates down for up to 36 minutes in the morning peak, these removals are vital to improving safety and reducing congestion on the Sunbury Line.

Our Scope:
🔹 570 m of strip footings & stitch pours + 95 barriers at Watsons Rd Bridge
🔹 360 m of strip footings & stitch pours + 60 barriers at Old Calder Hwy Bridge
Highlights:
✔️ Prefab reinforcement cages used in Watsons Road Bridge to hit key milestones
✔️ 500 m of footing formed, cages landed & poured in just 25 working days
✔️ 95 barriers landed in 15 working days – peaking at 12 barriers/day

✨Flashback Friday✨

Astern Group completed the Mordialloc Culvert for McConnell Dowell back in 2020. We successfully delivered two culverts from our package and our scope included the following;
•FRP Base and Wingwalls of 95m long, 8m wide Major Culvert CDG1
•FRP Base and Wingwalls of 85m long, 4m wide Major Culvert CDK1
Total scope included placing 500m3 of concrete and tying 125T of reinforcement.

✨Flashback Friday✨

Back in 2021, Astern Group were engaged by the South Eastern Program Alliance to complete FRP works at Mooroolbark Station as part of the Manchester Road Level Crossing Removal Project.

The crew completed a detailed scope of works which involved Forming, Reinforcing and Pouring concrete foundations for the stations main buildings, concourse slabs, Platform topping slab and the main stair foundations. The crew was able to tie and install over 250 tonnes of steel and pour over 650 m3 of concrete whilst working closely with other contractors to deliver quality FRP works for the client.

It was important to deliver accurate FRP works for the building foundations as there was very little room for adjustment to allow the modular buildings to be landed. The team were able to deliver the accuracy required allowing the modular buildings to land and install with ease.

Once the team finished FRP works on the deck slab, they were then tasked with the installation of 180 coping stones which was completed in a well-coordinated and timely manner.

Our team successfully completed the hardscape project for the Bell Station Level Crossing Removal which had 4500m2 of exposed aggregate footpaths and 1800m2 of ECOPact SUPs with many more items!

Proud to have delivered the formwork and concrete works for the Watsonia Road Bridge — a key connection in the North East Link project.

Our scope included:
✔️ Construction of 2 abutments and a 63-metre central pier
✔️ Placement of over 2,000 m³ of concrete across the bridge deck and diaphragms in 5 staged pours
✔️ Installation of 56 Super-T beams, each weighing approximately 100 tonnes
✔️ Construction of two 60-metre curved retaining walls on the bridge

Our crews pushed through long shifts, tight staging, and complex geometry to get the job done safely and on time.

A big thanks to our site team, project partners, and suppliers for their collaboration and commitment throughout — a great effort all around.

Back in 2020, we completed the Coburg Station FRP work package and program for John Holland which cost over $2 million, that consisted of two stages - 2 weeks Pre-Occupation and 4 weeks Main Occupation. In total, we placed over 850m3 of concrete and tied 123 tonnes of reinforcement.

The package included the following:
• FRP Concourse Slab – Pre and Main Occupation
• FRP Platform Slab
• Bearing Pads, Keeper Plates, Elastomeric Bearing and Super T Installation
• Coping Stone Installation on Platform Slab

Another completion! 😄👏🎉

Last year our team started works on a $3 million package at Croydon Station as part of the Coolstore & Cave Hill Level Crossing Removal🚉. Our scope of works were based at Croydon Station Car Park East 🚘🚗 and included the following:

- Installation of a large storm trap retention tank which consisted of 85 seperate precast units all weighing in the region of 6t.
- During these works, there was approximately 6000 cube of material excavated and safely removed off site.
- Along with this, Astern completed approx 600m of drainage lines, consisting of RCP drainage pipes and HDPE.
- We completed 140m of a retaining wall to allow the carpark to be construed at two different levels.
