During the recent flooding in Melbourne, one of our clients noticed that when they lost power, their UPS system did not keep their I.T equipment running. Once arrived on site, our UPS technician was able to immediately diagnose the reason why the UPS failed to perform effectively.

The battery pack pictured was removed from the UPS system on-site and the other photo is a comparison between the End-Of-Life battery (Long) that was inside the battery pack and a New Battery (Real Power). Here you can see obvious corrosion and leaking evident within the battery pack and the poor condition that the E-O-L battery is in.

Recently, our UPS technicians have been on emergency call outs to sites as client's Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems have failed during a mains power event i.e. blackouts, brownouts or power surges.

Common reasons why a UPS system may fail to support load include:
- Failure of internal components within the unit
- Poor condition of batteries or
- External factors i.e. high temperature enclosures, exposed to the elements (moisture) etc.

The batteries in this post have exceeded end of design life and became swollen - thus were no longer able to support the load connected to the UPS. Swollen batteries can be dangerous and should be replaced immediately.

Today our UPS technicians performed a much-needed battery replacement for our client in Sydney C*D. On arrival, the UPS system was in alarm as the batteries had reached end of design life. The internal conditions of the batteries were so poor that they would not support load if the mains power dropped! To avoid this from occurring in the future, our client is now on our affordable Preventative Maintenance contract.
