ANZIC is the Australian & New Zealand International Scientific Drilling Consortium
We equip scientists in Australia & New Zealand with the skills, global connections, samples and data needed to explore Earth's interconnected processes, its past and future ANZIC gives Australian and New Zealand scientists access to international projects harnessing state-of-the-art scientific drilling infrastructur

e, so they can address fundamental questions about Earth’s dynamic history, processes, structure and future.

Cores drilled in 2016 are still revealing secrets!

New research on the crater suggests that the impact that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs also created a long-lived underground hydrothermal system capable of sustaining life-friendly conditions for at least 8 million years, far longer than previously thought.

New research on the crater suggests that the impact that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs also created a long-lived underground hydrothermal system capable of sustaining life-friendly conditions for at least 8 million years, far longer than previously thought.

The study is based on rock samples drilled from the crater during Expedition 364 in 2016. https://www.ecord.org/expedition364/

It’s day, and these stripes tell a clear story of warming in New Zealand’s stunning Fiordland over the past 150 years.

ANZIC scientists from Sciences at University of Otago , institutions across NZ and around the world - including Dr Christina Riesselman - want to extend the climate picture back in time by 13,000 years... or maybe more!

Their proposed ICDP: International Continental Scientific Drilling Program project - FACET - aims to collect sediment cores from deep under the fjords, holding records of how these remarkable environments have actually stored carbon as the climate changed over thousands of years.

Fjords may occupy less than 0.1% of Earth's surface, but they are global heavyweights when it comes to carbon burial, accounting for an estimated 11% of annual marine carbon sequestration worldwide.

"A lot of carbon is being drawn down in this region," says Christina. "Plants grow rapidly because of the high rainfall, then a lot of the organic material slides off the steep fjord walls and becomes trapped in the fjord."

“We want to understand how this region works as a natural carbon sink, how it operated at different times in the past and - most importantly - what it might do in our warming future.”

IODP3 are looking for new and innovative proposals for offshore drilling or SPARCs (Scientific Projects using Ocean Drilling Archives) which meet future challenges in Earth, life and environmental sciences.

If you have a science idea, but need to put some great minds together to develop the proposal, a Magellan3 Workshop is the perfect format.

Hurry! The 15 July deadline is approaching fast!

Support for Australian Teachers to attend!

GeoSciEdX 2026 is a rare opportunity for Australian teachers to connect with the international geoscience education community, right here in Australia. You'll gain inspiration and new ideas to bring Earth sciences alive in your classroom.

ANZIC and AuScope are offering support to attend - covering registration, accomodation & travel.

The conference will be held in Adelaide from 14–16 August.

Supporting teachers is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen geoscience education. 💪
So please pass on the offer!
